MODS Progress Review
The MODS Progress Review is tomorrow and Friday (Apr 22 & 23). next Thursday and Friday (April 22 & 23). We will be handing out a final agenda tomorrow morning (start at 9am sharp, coffee and bagels will be provided). All of the presentations will be on Thursday, with a brief upstairs lab demo (filter wheel and the IMCS testbed system) in the afternoon. Lunch will be brought in Thursday. Friday morning will be discussions of MODS project schedule, budget, and commissioning planning, followed by lab and shop tours before lunch. In the afternoon the visiting committee from LBTPO has asked to tour the Rickenbaker aluminizing facility, and then will deliver a verbal summary in the afternoon.
Structure
The MODS1 upper framework is done, and has a nice coat of gray primer. The cart frame parts are done, with portions out for post-welding machining work. They should be integrating the cart and mounting the upper frame for finishing work over the next couple of weeks. They have agreed to store the cart and frame for us until we are ready to start working with it. Questions were raised about how to go about getting OSU property tags onto this equipment after they receive payment so we can legally identify it as "ours" while it is in their possession. Darren will work on this with OSURF (once again into the murky depths of OSURF purchasing and properites...)
Optics
Darren was out in Tucson last week and returned with pictures of MODS optics being fabricated at SOML. The blue camera corrector lens parent is on the coordinate measuring machine as it begins iterating through the final figuring. The red camera corrector parent has been generated and is now moving on to fine abrasive grinding. So far progress has been excellent. We will hear more details tomorrow in Paul's progress review talk.
