Mark and Tom reported on their trip to Indian Creek to do the final metering before welding on the MODS structure. The Indian Creek fabrication remains remarkably accurate. In a nearly 4-meter long structure the overall precision is of order 2-3mm. The guy they have doing the work is really good.
Welding has begun, we should have a final buffed and painted/primed structure completed in mid-September.
Tom is continuing the detailing of the AGW camera stage. No functional changes have been made to the specification, so he's moving ahead with the final bits, then on to preparing the work package for machining.
Mark has been tasked with detailing the design of the calibration system that fits into the top volume of the instrument. The goal is to finish the design details this fall and generate work packages for machining.
Paul Byard reports that the mounting fixtures on the integrating spheres for the quartz lamps are not up to spec. Simply put, they won't work. He will be preparing them for shipment back to the vendor for rework.
Paul reports that Steve Miller at SOML has reported an error in in maching the mounting holes in the last of the camera primary mirrors whereby there was some bad cracking in the mounting fixture. They can epoxy fill them, but we're unsure if it will be useful as anything other than a mechanical sample for assembling the camera. Our spare (5th) camera primary blank is in better shape than this, we may suggest to SOML that they put a figure on that. We will await further word from SOML on the state of the damaged part before deciding what to do.
