MODS Team Progress Report

2005 April 26

Space for MODS2 identified and seemingly assigned to us. The space is a single bay in the "Food Services" building on West Campus and is roughly 25x75-feet. The space has a large garage door (about 14x16-feet), a concrete floor, and a high (~20-ft) ceiling. We should be able to occupy the space in August and can have it for two years.

The cracked semi-polished camera primary will be used for IMCS and mechanism tests. The optic will be coated with silver soon.

The four field flatteners and two field lenses are at JML. JML claims that the lenses have poor finish (JML estimates scratch/dig at 120/80...much worse than the 40/20 specification). JML also claims that both blue field flatteners are not polished properly and look "gray". Paul will investigate and e-mail Steve Miller at SOML.

Successful tests of filler epoxy for mechanism mounting interface areas.

Multi-slit insert mechanism tests going well (cassette transfer, insert repeatability, etc.). Select drive tests begun.

The shop is working on grating selects 3 and 4 for MODS2.
