MODS Team Progress Report

2005 February 23

Attendees: Bruce Atwood, Jerry Mason, Paul Byard, Darren DePoy, Jen Marshall, Dan Papallardo, Mark Derwent, Tom O'Brien, & Rick Pogge, plus Todd Boroson and Mark Trueblood via video from NOAO/TSIP.

MODS Progress Review

The next MODS Progress Review will be on Monday, March 7th, at OSU. This will be a joint review with LBTO and the NOAO TSIP office. An agenda was passed around. PowerPoint files with all talks are due to Rick no later than 5pm on Friday, March 4th. A template has been passed around for general use for all talks.

MODS Optomechanical & Structure

Mark Derwent reported that the lifting tests were performed successfully at Indian Creek Fabricators, and that we are ready to go for delivery of the MODS1 structure on Friday (Feb 25) around noon. He also spoke with the people at Indian Creek about an earlier delivery of the MODS2 structure so we can have it in (nearby) storage to work on in parallel with MODS1.

On that same trip to Indian Creek, Mark picked up the two MODS2 grating-select mechanism carts, and inspected work on the MODS2 structure. The upper framework for MODS2 is mounted in the welding fixture, and the various subassemblies have been built up preparatory for final measurement before welding begins.

Tom reports that the main shop space is nearly all cleared out to make way for the MODS1 structure, Room 4088 upstairs is clear and converted into the main subassembly lab, and otherwise we're ready to go.

Finally, Mark and Tom have a new MODS CAD model that will be much easier to work with for designing the MODS enclosure and electronics mountings.

MODS Optics

Paul Byard reported that all fabricated optics except for the blue and red correctors are ready. The Blue Corrector is essentially done except for removal of dings in the spherical surface.

We have a quote for the MODS2 gratings (same as the current MODS1 set) which came in 9% higher than for MODS1, basically $140K for both R=1800 gratings together.

We are getting the coatings for the small optics done by JML, and have sent out requests for quote on the coatings for the dichroic beam splitters.

We are in the process of cutting an order for the bypass grating design and parts from ...

The meeting next week will be to practice our presentations for the MODS Progress Review on March 7th. Time to be announced.
