OSU/RC Queue Observing: UTC 2010 May 18 =========================================== ========== Observers: ========== Rick Pogge (OSU), Chris Howk (ND) Observing Assistant: David Gonzalez Huerta Support Astronomer: Olga Kuhn Instrumentation: John Morris ========== Instrument: ========== LBC ============= Quick Summary ============= (1) Calib : biases (2) Science : UVaHCG62 - Finished one OB on this target; no corresponding flats. NDwhim - Finished one OB for PG1206+459; no corresponding flats. No flats because of clouds and high winds Time Lost: - weather 5.0 hr - instrument 1.15 hr - telescope 0 Started out the night with thick high cloud at sunset that precluded taking evening sky flats. Opened and worked through variable cirrus in ~1-arcsec seeing until shutdown by high winds which precluded taking dawn sky flats. Lost a little over an hour to instrument problems: blue camera faults requiring repeat full restarts. ============== Detailed Notes: ============== Afternoon - Took 25 biases, but with lights on. Last files in this sequence were lbcb.20100517.222057.fits and lbcr.20100517.221913.fits. UTC 03:07 - Starting to get on the sky; cloudy conditions, but a window open for now. - No sky flats taken due to heavy clouds during twilight. - Not photometric. Light cirrus with clouds on the horizon. - Some difficulties connecting LBC to the TCS. Required reboot of LBC cmu computer to clear. Restart came back normal and were able to connect to the LBT/IIF w/o problems. - /newdata/ directory not being seen (Stale NFS handle fault). Got someone (Dave T?) to dismount/remount to clear fault. UTC 03:23 - Run BinoBias OB UTC 03:35 - Pointing star UTC 03:43 - Slewing to HCG62 for collimation. ================= UVa_Walker HCG62 ================= UTC 04:01 - Run UVaHCG62.ob. Seeing ~1.1". Breezy conditions. Seeing may have been a little variable. All-sky camera shows some clearing, but not photometric. ================== ND_Whim PG1206+459 ================== UTC 04:34 - Setup on PG1216+459 field. Running dofpia, converged. 04:40 - swung around in Az to check wind gusts, seems OK (sounded worse, but...) 04:46 - starting OB. Blue controller reported fault "FPGA not loaded (code 48) controller error" Restarting LBC cameras... That failed with the system frozen. Olga rebooted the cmu at 4:59... 05:03 - On reboot and restart, blue camera controller failed. Trying power cycle in LBC gui... failed at 05:08 to init blue camera. More full cycles tried 05:20 - System finally came up. Connecting to TCS OK. Auto-rebooted after a slight delay. 05:23 - running OB again, and executing dofpia to restore collimation... Wind declining some, now ~5m/s instead of 10-15 gusting to 20m/s Done w/o problems 05:30 - OB pg1206xa started normally. All-sky cam shows cirrus wafting by. 05:54 - OB pg1206xa finished normally. ~1.1" seeing or a bit better. 05:56 - Ran dofpia at pg1206xb position. Blue controller again reported fault "FPGA not loaded (code 48) controller error". Restarting LBC cameras again from within LBCcontrol GUI. 06:04 - Cameras restarted; starting dofpia script. 06:13 - OB pg1206xb started normally. 06:25 - Closing down due to strong wind gusts. OB pg1206xb partially finished (first 500s exposures). 09:25 - Continued high winds with little hope for change. Calling it a night...
