OSU/RC Queue Observing UTC 2010 Dec 07 (civil date Dec 06/07, 2010) =============================================================================== Observer: Paul Martini (OSU), David Atlee (OSU), Peter Garnavich (ND), Erica Hesselbach (ND) Observing Assistant: Steve Allason Support Astronomer : Dave Thompson Instrumentation : Tim Shih =========== Instrument: =========== Lucifer ========= Summary: ========= Very overcast at the start of the night. Ran some spectroscopic acquisitions to familiarize ourselves with procedures, although often couldn't even see the guide stars. Cleared enough by 3:30 that we started observing. Obtained data for OSU_mgiant: SDSS2,3,4,5,9,10 between times of really bad seeing and thicker patches of cirrus. Also tried OSU_M33star, although it set behind some clouds right when we started the integration and consequently no useful data were obtained. Obtained darks at the end of the night. ============= OSU mgiant ============= 03:23 clear enough to try sdss2 (about 2h lost to weather) 03:24 started arc calibration script 03:31 restarted arc calibration slit after fixing MASK code (finished 3:37) 03:41 acquisition 03:53 started script for sdss2, increased DIT to 300s, changed OFFSETS to -15 and +30 to avoid persistence (airmass = 1.35) 04:27 started spec flats - Note: 'halo1 36' turns off the lamp too quickly manually turned the lamp back on for the remaining flats 04:38 started arc script 04:42 moving to telstd1 04:55 started telstd1 observation (airmass = 1.3) - star not on slit!!! 05:00 new acquisition sequence 05:10 restarted observations of telstd1 05:16 arc, flat 05:31 moving to rvstd 05:34 pointing check 05:35 restarted acquisition 05:40 started observing script 05:51 arc, flat 06:06 moving to sdss5 06:16 sdss5 observing 06:24 arc, flat 06:41 acq for sdss3 06:45 seeing > 2.5", waiting a bit (15 min lost) 06:57 started sdss3 (seeing now about 2" , airmass = 1.3) 07:31 arc, flat ============= OSU M33star ============= 07:47 moving to M33star 07:52 acquisition (some trouble matching to finding chart, changed to acquisition images to K-band 08:13 started observations likely set behind clouds, no signal ============= OSU mgiant ============= 08:25 sdss4 acquisition started 08:35 sdss4 science started 08:47 aborted -- object not centered on slit and lost GS on offset (lost 15min) 09:06 started sdss4 again (adjusted offsets to not lose GS, tried tweaking star position in slit with little success) counts fairly low, probably cloud cover thickening 09:28 arcs, flats 09:45 slewing to sdss10 (lost a few min to remove bending forces in primary) 10:00 sdss10 started, increased integration times due to clouds 10:55 arcs, flats 11:10 slewing to telstd4 11:12 AGW failure, need to reboot AGW computer (lost 20 min) 11:30 rerunning acq 11:38 telstd4 started, then arcs and flats 12:00 slewing to sdss9 12:11 sdss9 started 12:16 restarted sdss9 (grating tilt error) 12:53 arcs, flats ============= Darks ============= started dark script at end of night
