OSU/RC Queue Observing UTC 2010 Dec 09 (civil date Dec 08/09, 2010) =============================================================================== Observer: Paul Martini (OSU), David Atlee (OSU), Peter Garnavich (ND), Terry Rettig (ND) Observing Assistant: Gene Bechetti Support Astronomer : Olga Kuhn Instrumentation : Doug Officer =========== Instrument: =========== LUCIFER ========= Summary: ========= Mostly cloudy at sunset, with cirrus and patchy stratus clouds covering 70% of the sky. Clouds begin to clear at approximately 7:00 PM. Seeing was approximately 0.5" at the beginning of the night, 0.4" in the middle, and 0.6" at the end. We observed: H2IMG: both BrG & H2 bands MWC480: two disk angles (0 & 45 degrees) MS 0451: H & K bands IZw18: complete spectral sequence + telluric standard HS0837: complete spectral sequence SDSS1309: complete spectral sequence + telluric standard, no flux standard Twilight flats: H, K, BrG bands Dark exposures for all configurations We experienced technical difficulties with focusing of the secondary mirror at the beginning of the night. These cost approximately 2 hours of observing time. We also had difficulty finding guide stars for several of the ND_diskangle slit orientations. These may be related to poor collimation, but we are unsure of the exact resolution. ============= Setup ============= 00:12 Sunset 00:15 Open dome 00:35 Begin reconfiguring telescope for LUCIFER 01:19 Finished configuration. Correcting telescope pointing. 01:50 Very poor telescope collimation. Unable to determine pointing. 02:01 Pointing toward Persson standard and attempting to collimate. 02:05 Checking secondary, tertiary mirror position accuracy. Appears okay. 02:07 Examining AGw chip image of guide star to diagnose collimation problem. 03:15 Moving to Alpha Pegasi. No source in LUCIFER image. 03:20 John Hill called in. Secondary mirror is sitting at zero. Reset secondary mirror hexapod. Image quality improves dramatically. 03:25 Check telescope pointing. ============= UVa_H2IMG ============= 03:27 Move telescope to IC5298, begin collimating. 03:30 Beginning first BrG image. Unable to locate guide star. 06:20 Returned to angle 0. Unable to locate guide star. Re-pointing telescope. 06:32 Moving to Persson standard star to re-collimate telescope. 06:40 Moving to pointing star and correcting telescope pointing. 06:51 Successfully collimated telescope. 06:52 Moving telescope to MWC480: angle 90. 06:59 Beginning first integration. ============= OSU_cluster ============= 07:13 Moving telescope to pre-H standard field. 07:16 Beginning integration.
