OSU/RC Queue Observing UTC 2011 Dec 31 (civil date 2011 Dec 30/31) =========================================== Observers: BShappee, CWillmer & ERyan Observing Assistant: Support Astronomer : DThompson Instrumentation : Instrument: MODS first half, LBC second half Summary: Mostly photometric and decent seeing Object/field completed: AZ_cl0218/cl0218_mask2 completed. OSU_LSNeIm/PTF10vqv first half. ND_WHIM finished. OSU_qso/1145 completed. Details: LBC: 25 Biases taken in blue and red MODS: execMODS grpixflats.cal execMODS grpixflats_r.cal ./doBias 01:00: Moved to nearby standard Feige110 to collimate, it took ~7 min to collimate. seeing looks oretty good for this early (~0.9") Still twilight but will run the standard to burn time. 01:39: acqMODS AZ_cl0218/cl0218_mask2.acq seeing ~0.8 01:50: execMODS AZ_cl0218/cl0218_mask2.obs seeing ~0.8 03:05: AZ_cl0218/cl0218_mask2.acq acqMODS css_nova.acq execMODS css_nova.obs There was a timeout error: >> PARTNER OSURC ** ERROR: Command 'PARTNER OSURC' timed out after 60 seconds ** Abort, Retry or Ignore? > Retry ** css_nova.obs aborted with errors at line 3 command 'PARTNER OSURC' Checked the script, everything looked ok and re-ran and then it worked fine... [**NOTE ADDED 2011 DEC 31 RWP - problem identified as an unintended "feature" of the script engines in that it wanted R at the Abort/Retry/Ignore prompt, not the whole word "retry". I guess the observers are less lazy than the programmers! A patched version fixes this, it only looks at the first letter, so if you type R, Reply, r, reply, roger, roothogordie, it will just see "r" and attempt a retry.] seeing ~0.7" 03:38: AZ_cl0218/cl0218_mask2.acq execMODS css_nova.obs seeing ~0.5-0.6" 04:03: acqMODS g191b2b.acq 04:11: had trouble finding the .obs, it was not located in the same place as the .acq script (/home/OSURC/MODS/StdStars)... wasted about 3 min execMODS -b dualgrating g191b2b.obs execMODS -b redgrating g191b2b.obs 04:32: execMODS OSU_LSNeIm/PTF10vqv.img seeing g~0.7 z~0.6 however seeing degraded to ~1.0 as the field set sky ~21.16 (according to the sky brightness monitor) We did 5 of 9 exposures before aborting, air mass getting a bit high and there are available LBC tagets. We will finish tomorrow. 05:54: Switching over to LBC 06:08: sent OB to nearby star to collimate and co-point 06:26: ND_WHIM/SA98 red side had some trouble converging and took a bunch of iterations to colimate 06:40: ND_WHIM/SA101 Saw this is the eaxact same coordinents as ND_WHIM/SA98, so we did not run the script. 06:45: OSUmonitor/N4203c seeing red~0.7 blue~0.75 07:05: OSUmonitor/M81c seeing red~0.75 blue~1.0 07:30 OSUmonitor/I2574 seeing ~1.15 07:47 ND_WHIM/pg1148a highish airmass but there is nothing else to observe right now. And the seeing is still better then the requested limit. Conditions look pretty photometric right now, and at least for the next ~ hour. ############ There was no focus field for this object!!! Colimation would noty converge after 10 iterations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE MAKE FOCUS SCRIPTS AS RECOMMENDED!!!!!!! Wasted 20 min. ############ 08:07 Moved to nearby star ACT0374 to hopefully get better stars for collimation. It took 4 cycles to converge on this nearby field. 08:15: Went back to ND_WHIM/pg1148a seeing blue~1.0-1.1 red~1.0-1.2 08:36: ND_WHIM/pg1206phot seeing blue~1.1 red~1.2 08:51: OSUmonitor/N3344 seeing red~0.75-1.0 blue~1.0 09:36: OSU_qso1145-gz1 checked to make sure that there are stars on the engineering chips in the begining seeing red~0.75 blue~0.9 OSU_qso1145-gz2 seeing red~0.6-0.7 blue~0.75-0.9 OSU_qso1145-gz3 seeing red~0.6-0.9 blue~0.8-1.0 OSU_qso1145-ri seeing red~0.8-0.9 blue~0.9-1.0 there was an error on the red side, where the script stopped after the 6th exposure. Tried to shut down and restart but LBC would still not behave. Dave then had to LBC kill/start. I recollimated and restarted the script. Total down time 18 min. The problem pushed us into twilight, but N4258 needed time series data. So I will take data pushing a decent into twilight and hope it is useful, but not make the observation off. I also skipped co-pointing to try and save a couple min. And collimation took a while, so this is really pushing it... Had to stop before the end.
