OSU/RC Queue Observing UTC 2012 June 09

Summary:

  Clear all night, some wind limits at dusk but calmed down a little, staying
  with gusts ~10m/sec from the SSW most of the night.

  This is a half night: 1st half is technical, 2nd half is OSURC.  Nights are
  real short, Astronomical Twilight is 2107 and 0330 UTC.  So we get only a
  little time to work with.

  Moon is bright, so we're somewhat limited in what we can do (this is 1 night
  earlier than the original planned dates).  Very few MODS/LBC targets are
  available given moon interference.

First run image is luci.20120609.0036.fits, earlier are from the technical
observing.


0700: OSU_GCX Collimation target

   pointing calibration at El=27deg.  Collimation went smooth.  

   NOTE: Could save a little time on the setup if we put in the mask to be used
   in the next

0705: OSU_GCX Mask 2

   Starting with field images, offset at sky position. Seeing ~1" on the guider,
   0.9" on DIMM.  Generally a little bouncy,

   Taking BrGamma field image... looks like 1.1"+ seeing, consistent with guider.

0710: Mask 2 into FPU, 

0730: Mask alignment done, taking confirmatory image

0755: Took a long time to figure out if it was aligned or not. The instructiions
      didn't help - we had zero guidance as to what the target field looked like
      vis-a-vis the slit targets to judge alignment. Given conditions and that
      the moon is so bright we can't observe anything else we're just going
      ahead while we sort this out offline.

0820: This is futile, the shift LUCI found was not right, we're getting nothing
      in the slits

0826: Setup to align by hand, starting with a thru-slit image.  Moon is real
      bright, nothing else to do...

0843: Aligned by hand using XVista, fired offset by hand, took a confirmatory
      image and stars down slits.  Fired first science image 0843.  Took less
      time to align by hand than with the LUCI tool...

      First pair out shows pairs of spectra on the dither, so we got it close
      enough to get something for them.  Seeing still 1.1-1.2 arcsec.

0918: Stopped at El=25 with 14/24 images taken. Going to El=26, rot=342, static
      for calibs.  Deploying calibration unit...

0920: Starting calibrations for this mask.  Flats and Arcs

0937: Configuring for Darks, but won't execute until the doors close and we're
      back at zenith.

1001: Darks started.  Will run for what is left of tonight with the dome closed.
