Observers: Steven Villanueva, Roberta Humphreys, Rick Pogge Support Astronomer: Olga Kuhn (remote from Tucson) Telescope Operator: David Gonzales NOTE: shared night with PEPSI 01:00 - 06:00 UT Turnover at 06:15 UT Our LBC targets are second half Summary: LBC OSU_Monitor N2903, N3344, N3627, N4258 N4236, N4395, N4242, N4826, M81 Problem: the blue image went badly out of focus twice. See notes Later in the night the blue image gradually elongated during the exposure sequence. see notes Near end of night about 6:15, Tracker, AO and focus failed on red side. With call to Olga, restarted LBC Finsihed night with M81 Details: All times are UTC unless otherwise indicated -------------------------------------------------------------- Cirrus clouds at start 06:15 configuring LBC 06:35 moving to N2903 focussing 06:45 starting exposure seeing 1.3 blue, 1.1 red wrong target loaded 2403 obs -- aborted 06:50 starting on N2903 seeing 1.7 blue too much moonlight, sky background too high, red saturated Continuing exposure sequence, this was our best target re moon angle + airmass 07:25 blue side images out of focus, degraded throughout sequence red side OK 07:31 moving to N3344 focussing 07:40 starting exposure - cirrus seeing 1.3 blue, 1.5 red 1.6 , 1.3 1.3 , 1.3 1.3 , 1.2 0.9 , 1.1 08:15 moving to N3627 focussing 08:24 starting exposure -- cirrus seeing 1.3 blue, 1.2 red 08:30 blue side losing focus again, red OK contacted Olga -- suggests problem is due to lack of star on tec chip, used to correct for focus drift. Other possibility is a temperature change on the mirror, but it was small. exposure sequence completed Problem is equivalent to blue image about half size of the focus pupil Will continue to observe to monitor problem 09:04 moving to N4258 focussing 09:14 starting exposure -- cirrus seeing 0.9 blue, 0.8 red 0.9 , 0.7 1.0 , 0.8 09:51 moving to N4236 focussing 10:00 starting exposure -- cirrus seeing 0.95 blue, 0.95 red 1.5 , 0.92 seeing degraded or losing focus in blue again on last exposure 10:13 moving to N4395 focussing 10:22 exposure started -- cirrus seeing 1.0 blue, 0.9 red 1.0 , 0.8 10:34 moving to N4242 focussing problem with dofpia convergence -- not converging in red after 10 iterations cleared active optics and trying again converged after 5 11:02 exposure started -- cirrus seeing 0.7 blue, 0.8 red 0.9 , 0.7 11:27 blue image beginning to degrade (very elongated) at image 5 of 6, red OK 1.0 , 0.65 11:32 moving to N4826 focussing 11:39 exposure started -- cirrus seeing 0.8 blue, 0.85 red 0.9 , 0.8 12:05 blue image elongated again at image 6 of 9 in blue, red OK can see it on guider image Can see same effect beginning on red image in exposure 7 of 9 Clouds are increasing so there could also be a guiding problem, 12:17 Tracking error in red Failed to write out 8th red exposure and did not take the 9th red integration. All 9 blue images wrote out 12:21 ERROR: Tracker AO and focus on red channel stopped. We have to restart LBC 12:22 move to M81 while restarting LBC First attempt failed and gave error -- WARNING (on red side) -- tracker, AO and focus 12:25 Called Olga LBC restart succeeded on 3rd try. All systems enabled and ready But preset failed -- "failure to upload OB" Olga determined this was due to a full home directroty. When the core dump was removed the upload and preset worked. 12:34 moved to M81 dofpia running co-pointing 12:45 exposure started -- clouds seeing 0.6 blue, 0.8 red 0.7 , 0.8 0.8 , 0.8 12:58 moving to N4449 focussing dofpia - no pupils found ------------------------------------------------------------------ DONE Telescope closed
