LBT OSU/RC Partner OBserving Notes Date: 2014 November 20 UTC (Night 1 of 8) Observers: Ben Shappee, Rick Pogge (OSU) Support Astronomer: Olga Kuhn Telescope Operator: Steve Allenson SUMMARY: LBC night. Forecast good once daytime high clouds passed us by at sunset. We worked all night from dusk until dawn. Seeing was mostly around 0.8-1 arcsec, with occasional excursions to 0.6 or as high as 1.2. Images were round for most images, and FPIA convergence was reasonably fast. We had three instances of needing to restart the TEC chip computers: twice for Red, once for Blue, that lost less than 30 minutes total. Programs Observed: OSU_monitor - many targets (OSU P1 and P2 LBC) UVa_WISE_VLBA - completed 4 targets of 6 (UVa P1 LBC) ND_oldsn - completed ND_edgeon - completed: ran NGC891 and the photometric calibration fields Calibs: B+R, g+r, and Us+I flats + end biases This complete all LBC programs for ND, 2/3 of the UVa, and first shot at OSU LBC programs reachable this run. Observing Notes: All times are UTC unless otherwise noted 00:00 - Startup, clouds from the day passing, wind is calm, outside temperature 2C Vent doors open, so biases at end of the night. Some LBC startup hiccups with the Red CCD computer solved during sunset. 01:20 - OSU_monitor, NGC6946. Blue 0.6" Red 0.7" arcsec. Still a little twilight, so running N6946rot.ob, then will go to science OB. Others we'll do the other way (science then rot). 01:50 - NGC6946 Science OB, re-doing focus first (no copoint) as we're still settling for the evening. Science start at 01:53 First images have 0.8" seeing 02:30 - UVa_WISE_VLBA, WISE_2331. Focus & co-point OB 02:41 - Running science OB. Seeing ~1" Blue, 0.7" Red, round images. 02:57 - OSU_monitor, NGC672 focus and co-point OB 03:05 - NGC672 Science OB started. Seeing ~1.1" blue, 1" red, round images 03:41 - Executing N672rot.ob. Noting that the red tec chip images are sub-bias signal (15ADU) garbage, the others are OK. Logs show it started at 03:34. Images are round but a little in the cores. This is for calibration so we're OK. 04:01 - Fired next OB after restarting Red TEC chip computer, getting real images. Off to next target 04:05 - OSU_monitor, NGC925 focus and co-point OB. 04:14 - Executing NGC925 science OB. 04:38 - OSU_monitor, NGC628 focus and co-point OB 04:49 - Executing NGC628 science OB - seeing about 0.8 arcsec 05:26 - Executing N628rot OB 05:41 - ND_oldsn, focus and co-point OB - seeing 0.7 arcsec 05:50 - Executing Science OB for ND_oldsn - seeing 0.7 arcsec SN easily visible in the blue images. Satellite crossed detector on Image 2 (missed the SN) 06:19 - ND_edgeon, NGC871 focus and co-point OB - seeing ~1 arcsec 06:31 - Executing NGC891 Science OB - seeing 0.8-0.9 arcsec Seeing a little variable towards the end, slightly worse in blue than red at the end. 07:06 - UVa_WISE_VLBA, WISE_0404 focus and co-point OB. Blue was further out of focus. 07:21 - Executing WISE_0404 Science OB - seeing ~1 arcsec 07:37 - UVa_WISE_VLBA, WISE_0342 focus and co-point OB. Seeing ~0.8 07:48 - Executing WISE_0342 science OB - seeing ~0.8 08:04 - ND_edgeon, SA98_UsBVI Calibration Field - focus only 08:12 - Executing science calibration OB - 08:19 - UVa_WISE_VLBA, WISE_0739 focus and co-pointing OB. 08:26 - Executing WISE_0739 science OB - seeing ~1" Found Blue TEC cut out at 07:51, since most images were very short the last few, the images are still round. 08:43 - Restarting Blue TEC computer... 08:47 - OSU_monitor, NGC2403 focus and co-pointing 08:55 - Executing NGC2403 Science OB - seeing ~0.7-0.8 09:07 - OSU_monitor, NGC2903 focus and co-pointing 09:12 - Executing NGC2903 Science OB - seeing ~1" in red, 1.1+ in blue 09:54 - OSU_monitor, IC2574 focus and co-pointing 10:00 - Executing IC2574 Science OB - seeing ~1" red, 1.1+ in blue 10:12 - OSU_monitor, M81 focus only - short move, fast convergence 10:15 - Executing M81 Science OB - 0.8-0.9" seeing 10:28 - OSU_monitor, M82 focus only (another short move) 10:33 - Executing M82 Science OB - 0.8-0.9" seeing 10:44 - OSU_monitor, NGC3344 focus and co-pointing 10:55 - Executing NCG3344 Science OB - 0.9-1" seeing 11:05 - LBC Red went offline - only the first one finished, two blue Different problem - TEC offline, not just reading low-ADU junk. Logs report an FPGA load error (see IT#2397) 11:10 - Re-executing the NGC3344 focus script 11:13 - Re-executing the NGC3344 science script - 0.8-1" seeing (red/blue) 11:44 - OSU_Monitor, NGC3077 focus and co-pointing 11:54 - Executing NGC3077 Science Script - 0.7-0.8" seeing (red/blue) 12:04 - OSU_Monitor, NGC4258 focus and co-pointing 12:12 - Executing NGC4258 Science Script - 0.7-0.8" seeing (red/blue) 12:49 - Executing N4258rot.ob for short calibrations 13:00 - getting bright as the last OB goes well into twilight 13:06 - Sky Flats B+R PA=0/180 g+r PA=180 Us+I PA=180 13:3 - Biases (25Bias_Bino.ob) with lights out
