LBT OSURC Partner Observing Notes February 21, 2015 (Night 6) Observers: Sarah Jane Schmidt, Scott Adams, Jake Turner Support Astronomer: Barry Rothberg (on call) Telescope Operator: Geno Bechetti Summary: Did not open as scheduled due to a thick cloud cover. At UT ~7:00, dewpoint rose to within 2 degrees of the temperature. By UT 10:40, clouds cleared and humidity dropped so we opened the telescope. We were able to obtain some data on two objects and a telluric standard through patchy clouds and poor seeing. We did not mark as done in the queue because we were unsure sufficient signal was obtained. Targets observed: OSU_SDSSRMnirqso/srmJ141039 OSU_SDSSRMnirqso/HIP71172 (telluric standard for srmJ141039) OSU_SDSSRMnirqso/srmJ141007 UT 2:00 overcast UT 3:58 test dark on LUCI, seems fine UT 7:00 humidity spike UT 10:33 humidity down, clouds clearing, opening dome somewhat high winds - 5-15 m/s 2” seeing UT 11:06 slewing to OSU_SDSSRMnirqso/srmJ141039 UT 11:33 starting science exposure for OSU_SDSSRMnirqso/srmJ141039 seeing varying from 1-2”, thin cirrus, winds 5-15 m/s first exposure, sky lines at brightest are at 15000 (well under saturation) UT 11:55 running script again due to low flux in target and variable conditions at UT ~12, hit a 2 magnitude cloud UT 12:17 slewing to OSU_SDSSRMnirqso/HIP71172 failed to find guide star, Geno checking pointing - probably failed due to pointing UT 12:22 slewing to OSU_SDSSRMnirqso/HIP71172 UT 12:32 taking spectra for OSU_SDSSRMnirqso/HIP71172 Camera wheel error first try, pressed initialize, cleared error UT 12:33 problem resolved, taking exposures now UT 12:38 slewing to OSU_SDSSRMnirqso/srmJ141007 UT 12:54 starting science observations for OSU_SDSSRMnirqso/srmJ141007 seeing from 1-2”, very light clouds this one may have sufficient flux, but we did not mark done because conditions were subpar and we did not have time for a second set of exposures. UT 13:20 morning twilight - closing
