LBT OSU/RC Observing Notes Date: 2015 May 20 Observers-- Fausnaugh, Garnavich, Villanueva SA-- Olga Kuhn (on-call) TO-- Geno B. Summary: Clear skies with high, light cirrus all night. Seeing was ~1.0 arcseconds. Observed 3 MODS targets and 3 standard stars. Two technical issues---MOS error on LUCI, causing us to switch to MODS, and a bad guide star (actually a galaxy), causing us to over-estimate the seeing and abandon the field. Completed Programs: UM_Impostor ( and 7/8 exposures OSU_USS_1558) Observed Targets: as above, + ND_LLSgal_1302b Details (All times in UT. Seeing is estimated from GCS.) --------------------------------------------------------- 1:20-- Started up LUCI to run calibrations. Ran the provided dark script (OSU_SDSSRM), which moved the double blind mask, but this resulted in the MOS error. We've notified Dave Thompson. 1:30-- Woke up MODS just in case. Getting ready to open. 1:54-- Dome is open, but there is an issue with TCS. TO and night crew are investigating. 2:17-- Issue is resolved. 2:19-- Sunset. Committing to MODS. 3:04-- Feige66 acquisition 3:08-- Feige66 observation (including prisms) seeing: 0.80 skies mostly clear, slight haze and cirrus on the horizon. 3:15-- 12 degree twilight 3:31-- UM_Impostor acquisition preset has been sent, redoing pointing 3:33-- UM_Impostor acquisition 3:44-- UM_Impostor observation (exposure started at 3:47) seeing: ~1.20 sky is clear, some cirrus on horizon. 3:50-- 18 degree twilight 4:53-- ND_LLSgal_1302a acquisition layer of cirrus clouds guide star looks much fainter than the nominal 12 mag in finder, checking pointing. seeing is >1.5, moving to a standard (retroactively discovered that this guide star is a galaxy) 5:08-- hz44 acquisition 5:11-- took field image while slewing...resending preset 5:18-- hz44 observation (including prisms) seeing: ~0.80 arcseconds clear sky, light layer of cirrus When configuring for prisms, terminal printed a disconcerting message: 'Done Instconfig completed with 1 fault' On the MODS dashboard, dichroic is highlighted yellow. However, prism spectra look fine. 5:35-- ND_LLSgal_1302b acquisition (switched to 1302b because guide star looks better). 5:51-- sent blind offset 5:52-- ND_LLSgal_1302b observation seeing: ~1.2 skies are clear, light layer of cirrus 6:48-- OSU_USS1558 acquisition 6:59-- OSU_USS1558 observation seeing: ~1.05 sky is clear, light layer of cirrus 8:29-- seeing has been variable, hitting a max of ~ 1.3-1.4, but currently has leveled off at ~0.80 9:05-- 4 exposures completed. Taking thru image to check alignment seeing: ~1.10 skies clear, light layer of cirrus. 9:12-- Alignment is good. Rerunning observation. 10:42-- 18 degree twilight. 3rd exposure finished. Cancelling remainder. seeing: ~1.1 10:48-- bd28 acquisition (unwrapping) 10:59-- bd28 observation (prism included) seeing: ~0.75 11:15-- Closing dome, running OSU_USS1558 cals.
