LBT OSU/RC Observing Notes Date: 2015 Dec 05 Observers-- Brown, Skillman Summary: Started night with LBC (to get M31 merger observation early in the run for possible MODS observation later). Then did highest priority monitor target and the comet (with Dave's help). Switched to MODS and did M33 nova and metal poor dwarf and finished the night with moon with two LUCI targets. Seeing started around ~1.2 but improved to ~1.0 and actually improved futher at the very end of the night. Low wind, low humdity throughout. Completed science targets: OSU_M31merger/M31merger OSU_monitor/N628 UM_CEW_SB/c2013x1_Dec09 OSU_ASASSN/ASASSN15th OSU_AGC198691/AGC198691 UVa_BCD_LUCI/J0820 UVa_BCD_LUCI/HS0837 _______________________________________________________________ UT 01:00 Start of night Observing wth LBC Taking sky flats transparency is good wind is low ~5 m/s humidity is low UT 01:10 Finished sky flats UT 01:12 Acquiring and FPIAing at OSU_M31merger focus field UT 23:29 start OSU_M31merger observations seeing ~1.1 arc sec which is not as good as requested but imaging was requested near the beginning of the the observing run. UT 01:59 acquiring and FPIAing OSU_monitor/N628 focus field UT 02:13 starting science integration on N628 seeing at start ~1.2 but getting better and trending down toward 1.1 (0.95 on the DIMM) UT 02:45 during the first V band exposure paused integration to run FPIA files 023632 and 023615 aborted exposures, not useful went back to focus field for FPIA back to science field created OB on the fly for 2 V and 2 R exposures UT 03:02 restart on N628 quick OB had a error, images were not derotated. stopped and corrected. files # 030157 030145 not useful UT 03:26 seeing has improved enough that UM_CEW_SB/c2013x1 is doable creating new co-pointing script for this night UT 03:37 Acquiring UM_CEW_SB/c2013x1 field Confusion in coordinates caused telescope to get lost Telescope recovered and FPIAed UT 03:48 Started science imaging of C/2013X1 Comet was saturated in the center, so a second OB was made with a shorter integration and that was also executed. Attempts to query the PI were unsucessful UT 04:33 Acquring UM_CEW_SB/SA93-101_BR UT 04:43 Acquring UM_CEW_SB/SA93-101_VI UT 04:50 Switch from LBCs to MODS1/LUC2 UT 05:08 Acquiring OSU_ASASSN/15th with MODS1 UT 05:24 Acquiring OSU_ASASSN/15th with MODS1 UT 05:37 Starting 15nx seeing ~1.0 arc sec UT 06:15 Acquiring MODSPHOT/g191b2b UT 06:28 Starting g191b2b UT 06:36 Acquiring MODSPHOT/gd71 UT 06:48 starting gd71 UT 07:04 Acquiring OSU_AGC198691/AGC198691 typo in original in acquistion OB updatepointing should be one word not two UT 07:25 Starting AGC198691 lost confidence in blind offset and used direct acquisition UT 07:50 Starting AGC198691 seeing ~1 arcsec UT 10:02 AGC198691 finished, switching from MOS1 to LUCI2 (switch motivated by moon rise) UT 10:04 Acquiring UVa_BCD_LUCI/J0820 Software failure/pilot error required recovery UT 10:43 Back to Acquiring UVa_BCD_LUCI/J0820 UT 10:54 starting J0820 UT 11:34 Acquiring telluric standard HD63160 Software problem, restarting scheduler UT 11:44 Acquiring telluric standard HD63160 UT 11:49 Starting HD63160 UT 11:54 Acquiring UVa_BCD_LUCI/HS0837+4717 UT 12:05 Starting HS0837+4717 UT 12:34 Acquiring telluric standard HD63160 We're redoing this because it looked like the previous observation was saturated Dave Thompson edited the OB that we're using this time. (He also changed MER mode to LIR mode as per LUCI documentation.) UT 12:43 starting HD63160 UT 12:47 Re-did HD63160 for good measure UT 12:53 Re-did HD63160 one more time with even shorter integration and a new offset for demonstration purposes. UT 13:15 Telescope stowed started LUCI calibrations for UVa_BCD_LUCI program. Script flat.xml saturates the detector. The integration time was reduced to minimum and the detector was still at saturation. A slit was introduced to reduced the light. Script arc.xml was not attempted. Arc calibration was done by hand.
