LBT OSU/RC Observing Notes Date: 2015 Dec 10 (UT) Observers: Brown Support: Dave Thompson (on call) TelOps: David Gonzalez Summary: Started off the night with thick clouds, did the MMS calibrations. Opened in time to get to ND_mls, observed in pseudomonocular mode (MODS1+LBCR). Switched over to LBC to try and get the rest of the OSU_monitor targets, but the LBCs were having problems. Housekeeping went down, but the other issues were mainly focus related and at least partially due to deteriorating conditions. Switched at the very last minute to try and observe a very recent supernova in a relatively nearby galaxy. Collimation was still difficult, ended up getting 1 spectrum that wasn't completely sky. Completed science targets: ND_mls OSU_monitor_N4236 OSU_monitor_N3077 OSU_monitor_I2574 OSU_monitor_N4605 OSU_ASASSN15tw _______________________________________________________________ UT 00:00 Start of night Set up for MODS, but it's pretty cloudy. Might open later. UT 01:45 M33c.cal UT 02:40 mods.3.turner.cal Mask ID was not up to date in cal, acq, obs scripts UT 03:20 Restarting mods3.turner.cal with correct mask ID UT 04:30 Looking like it might clear up UT 04:45 Some patchy clouds but we'll try it out UT 05:05 Acquiring ND_mls UT 05:15 DOFPIA was having severe trouble. Aborted, backed out, David added corrections by hand, restarted, converged. UT 05:33 mls.obs and mls_lbred.ob started seeing ~0.7 arcsec, still patchy clouds UT 06:30 Image quality still looks great. Keeping an eye on it in case DOFPIA needs to be done again UT 07:00 Thin clouds on the all sky camera, but image quality seems good, seeing ~0.7 arcsec (< 3 pixel FWHM) UT 07:20 Cloud cover is pretty sporadic. DIMM, GCS, and LBC seeing estimates are varying between 0.8 and and 1.2 arcsec UT 07:35 mls.obs finished. Cancelling the 100 remaining LBC exposures. Going to do a quick standard before switching to LBCs. UT 07:45 g191b2b-dg.obs UT 08:00 Switching to LBCs UT 08:15 Acquiring OSU_monitor_N3344. DOFPIA failed 3 times. Low elevation may be causing problems. Moving elsewhere. UT 08:28 Acquiring OSU_monitor_N2903. Least airmass at the moment. UT 08:40 Still failed. Working with Dave to resolve. UT 09:00 Need a field with brighter stars. Acquring N4236. DOFPIA eventually converged, though the last images don't look very promising. Eventually restarted IRAF in order to finish the copointing. UT 09:35 OSU_monitor_N4236.ob Seeing 1.5", variable UT 09:51 Acquiring OSU_monitor_N3077. Clouds looking better. UT 10:01 OSU_monitor_N3077.ob Seeing ~1.1" UT 10:11 Acquiring OSU_monitor_I2574. Bright star near focus field caused some issues, but DOFPIA eventually converged. UT 10:20 OSU_monitor_I2574.ob Need to LBC kill, LBC restart (blue housekeeping dropped) UT 10:38 Restarted OSU_monitor_I2574.ob Seeing ~1" UT 10:52 Acquiring OSU_monitor_N4605 UT 11:00 OSU_monitor_N4605.ob Seeing ~0.9 UT 11:16 Acquiring OSU_monitor_2903. DOFPIA having trouble. Eventually converged, but problems with pointing/presets, issues with telescope. UT 11:42 Re-acquiring OSU_monitor_2903. The bright star is causing issues. Moving to higher priority target. UT 11:52 Acquiring OSU_monitor_3344. DOFPIA still struggling, only finding 1-2 pupils. Clearing active optics and trying elsewhere. UT 12:00 Acquiring ND_sext, focus field has several bright stars. DOFPIA taking quite a while. Seeing might just be too poor. Talked with Dave, DOFPIA was behaving strange. UT 12:43 Reconfiguring to MODS to observe very recent supernova UT 13:15 This probably isn't going to work out. Difficulty collimating. Bright source on acquisition image. Took 2 exposures.
