LBT OSU/RC Observing Notes Date: 2015 Dec 31 (UT) Observers: Rick Pogge and Jake Turner (at Tucson Remote Facility) Support: Barry Rothberg (in Tucson) TelOps: David Gonzalez Summary: Night started with some high thin clouds and contrails (not photometric). Acquired and observed ND_Wave2. First image of ND_Wave2 was in seeing between 1.5 - 2.1". Seeing improved on the last three images of ND_wave2. Took one more image of ND_Wave2 due to improved seeing. Acquired and observed OSU_M33_LS5 (seeing steady around 0.8"), high and thin clouds (1-2 mags of extinction). OSU_M33_LS5 spectra look good! Acquired and observed OSU_M33_LS6 (seeing 0.8", few thin clouds). OSU_M33_LS6 spectra look good! Acquired ND_gwave1 but could not see point source so we skipped (lots of clouds, 0.9" seeing). Acquired and observed OSU_AGCLUCI. Initial acquisition had the wrong coords for OSU_AGCLUCI. We are able to see the desired emission line in OSU_AGCLUCI. Acquired and observed UVa_DD068. Didn't complete full set of UVa_DD068 because obs were too close to zenith but data looks good. Acquired and observed UVa_J1032 (0.8" and thin clouds). Ran LUCI2 and MODs Cals. Completed science targets: ND_wave2 OSU_M33_LS5 OSU_M33_LS6 OSU_AGCLUCI UVa_DD068 (didn't complete whole set but data looks good.) UVa_J1032 Calibration Targets: bd284211 (MODS flux std) g191b2b (MODS flux std) HD98989 (LUCI2 telluric) HD92573 (LUCI2 telluric _______________________________________________________________ UT 01:18 Starting night with MODS. Some high thin clouds and contrails (not-photomteric). Seeing 1.65" UT 01:19 Moving to bd284211 (standard star): UT 01:25 Acquiring bd284211. (seeing 1.1", variable). Had to do x offset by 0.6" UT 01:27 Obs of bd284211 (seeing 1.3", variable) UT 01:38 Acquiring ND_wave2 (canceled, need to unwrap AZ) UT 01:42 Acquiring ND_wave2 (convergence is taking a long time): seeing is up to 2" but steady around 1.3" (jumping a lot) Can see target. UT 01:52 Acquiring ND_wave2 with offset (2" and jumping around, was up to 3") UT 01:56 Taking through slit of ND_wave2 again (due to high seeing). (Seeing 2.2- 2.7") UT 02:00 Obs of ND_wave2 (4x600 secs) (seeing at start: 2.1", jumping around a lot) (seeing varying between 1.5" and 2.1") UT 02:17 Second image of ND_wave2 (seeing is now varying between 1.1 - 1.5") (high thin clouds) UT 02:29 Third image of ND_wave2 (seeing is now between 1.1 - 1.3", with less variability than before) UT 02:39 Fourth image of ND_wave2 (seeing is now between 1 - 1.1", converging to 1") (nothing visible in the spectra) UT 02:50 Taking field image of ND_wave2 by hand since seeing is a lot better than before (No obvious point source) UT 02:56 Obs of ND_wave2 (1x600 secs): Doing it again (seeing: 1.1-1.3") UT 03:10 Acquiring OSU_M33_LS5 UT 03:30 Obs of OSU_M33_LS5: 3x1200 (seeing 0.8" and steady, high thin clouds, 0.5 mag extinction) (First spectra looks good!) UT 03:56 Second image of OSU_M33_LS5 (seeing 0.8-0.9" steady) (high thin clouds, 1.5 mags of extinction at times) (spectra looks good!) UT 04:17 Third image of OSU_M33_LS5 (seeing 0.9") (high thin clouds, 1-3 mags of extinction, variable) Lost guide star for a few minutes (3 mags of extinction) (spectra looks good!) UT 04:37 Acquiring OSU_M33_LS6 UT 04:48 Obs of OSU_M33_LS6 (3x1200) (seeing: 0.8") (a few thin clouds, 0.25 max extinction) (all spectra look good!) UT 05:34 Third image of OSU_M33_LS6 (seeing 0.9 - 1.2") (a few thin clouds, 0.5 extinction) (2 mag of extinction in the last 60 seconds) UT 06:00 Acquiring ND_gwave1 - First image was taken in 2+ mag of extinction. Can't see any independent point source from nucleus of galaxy (seeing 0.9") - Taking another image (less extinction) - Taking 2 min image Skipping because we can't see a point source, in communication with PI, he agreed with the skip call. UT 06:18 Acquiring g191b2b (standard star) UT 06:23 Obs of g191b2b (standard) UT 06:37 Lots of clouds and moon is now up. We have no targets that we can look at. Weathered out for now. ---Moving to LUCI UT 07:32 Pointing Check near OSU_AGCLUCI UT 07:52 Acquiring OSU_AGCLUCI Error with preset, re-ran UT 08:16 Obs of OSU_AGCLUCI (Light clouds, 0.8") Dec coords were wrong in the script. Aborted UT 08:26 Acquiring OSU_AGCLUCI (with new coords) UT 08:44 Obs of OSU_AGCLUCI (can't see object in slit) Light clouds -Sky subtraction does not show any emission lines for first images -Second images do show the desired emission line UT 09:35 Acquiring HD98989 (Telluric star) UT 09:42 Obs of HD98989 UT 09:45 Acquiring DD068 (UVa_BCD_LUCI) UT 09:58 Obs of DD068 Seeing: 0.5", light clouds with more coming in) Can see emission lines UT 10:20 Had to stop early because we were getting too close to Zenith but with very good seeing and less cirrus, we got good enough spectra we think for the PI. UT 10:24 Acquiring J1032 (UVa_BCD_LUCI) could not find guide star due to LBT pointing zero point drift David re-set the zero points, re-ran the acquisition, and got a guide star. UT 10:28 Obs of J1032 Seeing: 0.8-0.9, lots of thin clouds Not obvious what we are looking for with this configuration (different cenwave) UT 11:00 Acquiring HD92573 (Telluric for J1032) UT 11:06 Obs HD92573 UT 11:11 Running LUCI2 Cals/ MODS Cals We are out of bright targets and clouds are getting thicker and starting not get guide stars. Moon is bright. UT 11:57 Done with LUCI2 Cals UT 12:35 Done with MODS Cals
