LBT OSU/RC Observing Notes Date: 2016 Jan 01 (UT) Observers: Rick Pogge and Jake Turner (at Tucson Remote Facility) Support: Barry Rothberg (in Tucson) TelOps: David Gonzalez Summary: A few high thin clouds to start. During pointing and collimation, the pointing was not working. We encountered the dreaded TCS anomaly. Start of the night there are high thin clouds and non-photometric (1" seeing). Acquired and observed ASASSN14il, high thin clouds (1.2" seeing). Good observations and emission lines seen. Acquired and observed OSU_SBqsos4civ/q0148, high thin clouds but steady seeing and transparency (<1"). Spectra looks good and absorption lines can seen clearly. During acquisition of UVa_XO2b_Exo the weather unexpectedly made a turn for the worst. The humidity went over the limit and we had to close. Mountain was enclosed in freezing fog for many hours. Fog, high humidity, and light ice accumulation closed the telescope from UT 05:23 until sunrise. Completed science targets: ASASSN14il OSU_SBqsos4civ/q0148 Calibration Targets: g191b2b _______________________________________________________________ UT 00:45 MODS Calibrations for UVa_XO2b_Exo UT 01:00 Starting night with MODS. Pointing and collimation. The pointing at the start of the night is not working correctly. We are having the TCS anomaly. UT 02:11 TC anomaly is over. Pointing and collimation again. 1" seeing UT 02:19 Acquiring ASASSN14il (A few high clouds, 1.1-1.4" seeing) UT 02:36 Obs of ASASSN14il (3x600) (seeing 1.2", a few high clouds, steady seeing, non-photometric) (Spectra looks good! Can see emisson lines of interest) UT 03:13 Acquiring OSU_SBqsos4civ/q0148 (Used UT330 acq) (seeing 1", a few high clouds, non-photometric) UT 03:22 Obs of OSU_SBqsos4civ/q0148 (3x300) (seeing 1", a few high thin clouds, steady seeing and transparency) (Spectra looks good, can see Lyman alpha forest and other absorption lines) UT 03:44 Acquiring g191b2b (calibration, dual mode) UT 03:54 Obs of g191b2b (dual mode) (few high thin clouds, 0.8" seeing) UT 04:00 We are a go for UVa_XO2b_Exo. Weather looks like it will improve. Seeing and transparency are steady and very good right now. A few thin clouds. UT 04:07 Acquiring UVa_XO2b_Exo Centered the stars in the boxes really well. UT 04:22 Humidity is spiking (90% and rising), and guide star is gone due to clouds. UT 04:45 Humidity is lowering but clouds are still a problem. Sky is completely cloudy UT 05:16 Obs of UVa_XO2b_Exo Starting sequence of 3. Weather is still not good, high humidity with spikes and cloudy. Acquisition was straightforward. Treated it as a long-slit acquisition instead of MOS. UT 05:23 Closed because of high humidity after only 4 spectra. UT 06:30 Mountain is enclosed in freezing fog. Can't see anything on the all sky camera UT 07:00 Happy New Year MST! UT 09:07 Humidity has dropped but there is ice on the all sky camera. Railings are still wet outside. UT 09:35 Humidity is now increasing again. Cloudy and ice on all sky camera UT 10:26 Humidity now above limit, cloudy, ice on camera UT 11:00 Weather has not improved. We are calling it a night.
