LBT OSU/RC Observing Notes Date: 2016 Jan 02 (UT) Observers: Rick Pogge and Jake Turner (at Tucson Remote Facility) Support: Olga Kuhn (On call; in remote room for a few hours) TelOps: David Gonzalez Summary: Sky is clear at sunset. Start of the night the sky is clear and sky is photometric (0.8" seeing). Acquired and observed UVa_BCD_MODS/J0159, clear and no clouds (0.8" seeing and stable). Good observations and emission lines seen. Acquired and observed UVa_BCD_MODS/J0301, clear and no clouds (0.8" seeing and stable) Good observations and emission lines seen. Acquired and observed ASASSN15nx, no clouds and stable seeing (0.9" seeing and photometric). Good observations and emission lines seen in SN and galaxy. Acquired and observed UVa_BCD_MODS/J0739LM, no clouds and stable seeing (0.7" seeing and photometric). Acquired and observed ND_void/void, clear and no clouds (stable seeing 0.9" and photometric). Switched to LBC around UT 8:23. When we were focusing OSU_monitor/N2903 we ran into a problem with the blue LBC. The pupil image turned into all zeros. We had to turn on/off LBC twice before blue LBC would function correctly. When we finally observed OSU_monitor/N2903 long axis bands appeared on all the chips and affected our data. Due to this error we decided to only run red LBC the rest of the night. Observed OSU_monitor/N2903 with light cirrus clouds and 0.8" steady seeing. Tried to focus on OSU_monitor/N3344 but dofpia would not converge (maybe due to heavy clouds in that area of the sky). During dofpia the coma was oscillating and not converging. Observed OSU_monitor/M82 (1" seeing and steady) and OSU_monitor/M81 (0.8" steady seeing) in cirrus. During focus of OSU_monitor/N4258 we encountered a popup box error: "command rejected since another is running!". David/Olga had to kill and restart the LBC software in order to proceed. Obseved OSU_monitor/N5474 and OSU_monitor/M101 in little to no cirrus (0.8-0.9" steady seeing) Completed science targets: UVa_BCD_MODS/J0159 UVa_BCD_MODS/J0301 OSU_ASASSN15nx UVa_BCD_MODS/J0739LM ND_void/void OSU_monitor/N2903 OSU_monitor/M81 OSU_monitor/M82 OSU_monitor/N5474 OSU_monitor/M101 Calibration Targets: bd284211 g191b2b _______________________________________________________________ UT 00:53 Starting night with MODS. UT 01:15 Acquiring bd284211 (calibration) (sky is clear, 0.82" seeing) We were able to imclock despite modsawke not being ran UT 01:30 Obs of bd284211 (calibration) (seeing 0.86" ,sky is clear, constant seeing, photometric) imcslock failed to lock on Ran mods1Wake and that fixed the imcslock problem UT 02:00 Acquiring UVa_BCD_MODS/J0159 (Sky is clear, seeing 0.8") UT 02:16 Obs of UVa_BCD_MODS/J0159 (4x800; 53 mins) (seeing 0.8" , clear, photometric) (Spectra look good and emission lines are seen ) -SMT light was on at the end of last expsoure but LBT is pointed in a different direction UT 03:19 Acquiring UVa_BCD_MODS/J0301 (seeing 0.8", clear, photometric) UT 03:29 Obs of UVa_BCD_MODS/J0301 (4x800; 53 mins) (seeing 0.9", clear, seeing stable, photometric) (Spectra looks good and emission lines are seen) UT 04:32 Acquiring OSU_ASASSN15nx (seeing 0.8", clear, seeing stable, photometric) UT 04:43 Obs of OSU_ASASSN15nx (3x1200; 60 mins) (seeing 0.9", clear, seeing stable, photometric) (spectra looks good, can see lines in SN and galaxy) UT 05:49 Acquiring g191b2b (calibration) (seeing 0.9", clear) -3 min slew and took awhile to converge UT 06:02 Obs g191b2b (calibration) (seeing 0.7", clear and stable, photometric) UT 06:14 Acquiring UVa_BCD_MODS/J0739LM (seeing 0.7", clear and stable) UT 06:26 Acquiring UVa_BCD_MODS/J0739LM (4x800, 53 mins) (seeing 0.7", clear and stable) (Spectra looks good and emission lines are seen) UT 07:29 Acquiring ND_void/void -Preset canceled, need to unwrap AZ. UT 07:35 Acquiring again ND_Void/void UT 07:46 Obs of ND_void/void (seeing 0.9", clear and stable, photometric) (Spectra is good and emission lines in blue/red are seen) ============= Switch to LBC UT 08:23 Switching to LBC for the rest of the night UT 08:28 Taking biases on MODS UT 08:29 Moon has risen UT 08:46 LBC authorized UT 08:50 Focus for OSU_monitor/N2903 UT 09:03 We encountered a problem during the co-pointing. After several iterations the blue pupil image turned to all zeros. We called Olga for assistance. We turned the LBC off and on again. When we turned it on, we go the error: "Blue Camera OB execution error, Camera ccd controller error" We turned LBC off and on again and that fixed the error. UT 09:19 Reran dofpia on OSU_monitor/N2903. This time both the blue and red channel converged. UT 09:35 Obs OSU_monitor/N2903 (30 mins) (Thin cirrus clouds throughout the whole sky, 0.8" seeing steady) - First Image: Horizontal chip on the blue channel has many bands along the long axis (could be read-out problem). Does not affect our data. - Second image and every image afterwards: Long axis bands now appear on all the chips. Does affect our data. UT 10:17 Focus OSU_monitor/N3344 Only running red LBC due to problem with blue LBC. Skipping co-pointing. UT 10:31 Restarted dofpia with the first option due to red not converging. Program was oscillating on coma. UT 10:35 Clouds are now heavier. dofpia does not find any pupils. UT 10:42 Focus on OSU_monitor/M81 Moving to new target due to clouds. M81 is in an area with less clouds. UT 10:49 Obs OSU_monitor/M82 (Red only) Lots of cirrus (seeing 0.8" steady) -Loaded the wrong OB file (M82 instead of M81) UT 11:00 Focus on OSU_monitor/M81 Had to restart dofpia due to oscillating around ComaY UT 11:11 Obs OSU_monitor/M81 (10 mins) (Red only) Light cirrus (seeing 1" seeing steady) UT 11:23 Focus OSU_monitor/N4258 (very light cirrus) During dofpia we received an error with the popup box: popup box: "command rejected since another is running!" Tried to power cycle LBC but we received the same error. David/Olga had to kill and restart LBC software to get rid of the error Moving to different target nearby to see if OB works UT 11:46 Focus OSU_monitor/N5474 Good convergence, no errors UT 11:51 Obs OSU_monitor/N5474 (Red only) (light cirrus, 0.8 -0.9" seeing steady) UT 12:26 Focus OSU_monitor/M101 UT 12:32 Obs OSU_monitor/M101 (Red only) (little to no cirrus, 0.9" seeing steady) UT 13:04 Script is done. Closing up UT 13:12 Bias and Dark with LBC UT 13:17 Night is over.
