Date: 2017 Sep 18 Observers: S Johnson M Johnson TO: David SA: Barry Moon phase: Summary: Overall, a good night on LBC. Seeing was really good all night essentially, and weather behaved exceot fir the wind picking up. We had to double up on the UVa_M33 field as it was the best for pointing away from the wind. The wind messed up some of the N628 frames, and will need to be sorted by hand. We spent about three hours on ND_nher since conditions were good. We took some twilight flats, but clouds were coming up. Minor technical issues: - messed up on the 'prepdir', so might be problems with logging - issue with ND_nher copointing script, but made our own - wind picked up during observation of N628. THERE ARE BAD IMAGES. There are some good ones, but need to be sorted Completed Programs: - ND_nher (~3 hours) - UVa_M33 Field 1 - UVa_M33 Field 2 - OSU_monitor - N6946 - N672 - N628 (maybe, some definitely bad images, may need to be redone) Calibrations: LBC: g-sloan, TiO flats x2 PAs (twilight WITH POTENTIAL CLOUDS and STARS) Standard star: Details (All times UT): ---------------------------------- Plan: Patchy clouds this evening. With the weather being bad the past few nights, even if it did clear up, we don't want to start the KELT 9 transit with LUCI due to the high chance of it being interruptted. We will begin with LBC, probably start on UVa_M33, then ND_nher, and OSU_monitor to fill gaps, as Rick suggested. Tentative order is ND_nher, then a few OSU_monitors to let M33 rise a bit more before observing their first field. 00:55 - patchy clouds persist, humidity is sitting around 60 though. Marshall is planning out sky flats. we have quite a few filters to do. 01:22 - sunset 01:30 - taking test biases, still patchy clouds, clearing slightly 01:33 - probably not taking flats this evening due to patchy clouds, but we are opening 01:41 - starting skyflats, BUT CLOUDS IN SKY. THEY MAY NOT BE GOOD. Did g_Sloan/TiO in 2 PAs, attempted V_Bessel/Y_FAN but could not get enough counts and aborted attempt. 02:21 - starting with ND_nher still, moving there now 02:37 - problem with coppointing script, restarting after making one 02:41 - started ND_nher, will remain here for two hours, seeing is 1.20, humidity remains around 60 percent, so we should be able to complete this one I think 03:08 - images turning out okay, mighty be slightly blended with neighbor star. Seeing is holding about 1.25, and humidity remains stable. 03:36 - Seeing has improved to average of 1.10, field looks good. Small upward trend in humidity, but not worried about it yet. We are probably going to do UVa_M33 right after this, as that will end us about 06:00UTC, when the humidity killed us last night 04:12 - Seeing has improved, sitting around 1.00 arcsecond 04:28 - Seeing is sitting around 0.9, we are going to stay on ND_nher till 05:40. 05:00 - Seeing remains at 1.00 arcseconds 05:07 - Seeing has begun to increase with airmass, thought about leaving early. But it's floating around 1.3 on occasion, and the readme says a limit of 2.0 arcseconds. The nova is still pretty distinguishable in the images as they are coming out. We will stick on it till 5:40 05:28 - Seeing is settling down, and we will remain here for another ten minutes 05:41 - Moving to next target (N6946 for OSU_monitor), focus and co-pointing. 06:04 - Beginning science observation of N6946. Seeing has floated around 0.95 06:45 - Moving to UVa_M33 Field 1. Have to do azimuth unwrap on the way. 07:02 - Started UVa_M33 Field 1, seeing at about 0.9 arcseconds 07:33 - Seeing remains good, humidity has begun to trend upwards, hitting about 70 percent 07:45 - Seeing worsening somewhat, up to ~1.2 arcsec. Humidity just below 70 percent still 08:00 - Seeing still jumping around, range of 0.85 to 1.2 arcseconds 08:08- finsihed UVa_M33 Field 1, moving to OSU_monitor N672 08:18 - started OSU_monitor N672, seeing is at 1.0 arcseconds. Wind is starting to pick up a bit. 08:54 - finishing N672, wind really picking up. Moved to N628. 09:12 - starting OSU_monitor N628, seeing 0.9 and wind calmer but humidity nearly 80%. 09:46 - issues with guiding may have messed up, doing two more images on N628 before moving on 09:59 - lbcb..094839 is a bad, lbcr..094835 is bad. Issues with elevation(?), David taking care of it. Could be wind? Will need to go through all from N628, should be four or five bad images. We are not marking it as done until we go through the images. 10:27 - had to find a target out of the direction of the wind, settled on UVa_M33 Field 2. Starting now, and will probably our last science observation, seeing is 0.9 arcseconds 11:33 - UVa_M33 Field 2 completed, but not enough time to execute another science observation. Waiting for twilight to perform flats 12:27 - Starting flats - V/Y-FAN. V-band overexposed (OK since have V flats from post-monsoon startup), but want to get good counts on Y-FAN. 2 PAs, but Y-FAN maybe getting a bit too high on last exposures. Getting too bright for even narrow-band filters, couldn't get CN. Closing. Bad images: lbcr..093052,
