Date: 2017 Nov 19 UT Observers: Jon Brown, Patrick Vallely, Pat Kelly TO: David Gonzalez SA: Dave T (on call) Moon phase: Summary: Had good weather almost all night (lost ~90 min due to clouds), and only had a couple minor hiccups with the LBC software. Got through nearly all of the Priority 1 monitor targets, and completed the remaining LBC programs. At this point we've obtained flats for a large fraction of the filters used in this run (most importantly the narrow band filters that aren't typically installed). Any that we have missed should be available in the archive from relatively recent runs (i.e. more recent than any filter cleaning). Minor technical issues: There were some issues turning on the LBCs; there were vague errors regarding the rotator, filters, and hardware/power. This is apparently not uncommon; we power cycled the LBCs ~4 times and eventually they turned on with no issues. We also had one of these errors interrupt an exposure sequence, but we recovered fairly easily. Completed Programs: OSU_merger/M31 OSU_monitor/N628 OSU_monitor/N672 OSU_monitor/N925 OSU_monitor/N6946 ND_sn09ig/sn09ig_BR UVa_M33_GC/M33_Field4 OSU_monitor/M82 (data taken, clouds, not marked completed) OSU_monitor/M81 (data taken, clouds, not marked completed) OSU_monitor/N3077 (data taken, clouds, not marked completed) OSU_monitor/I2574 (data taken, clouds, not marked completed) OSU_monitor/N2903 OSU_monitor/N3489 OSU_monitor/N4214 OSU_monitor/N4449 Calibrations: LBC: Evening Flats (U+TiO, V+R) Morning Flats (B+Y, Uspec+F970N; cloudy) MODS: LUCI: Standard star: Details (All times UT): ---------------------------------- 00:00 - Handover ect. Weather looks great. Going to try TiO flats. Got a repeated error when turning on LBC, had to turn off and on ~4 times and eventually it worked. Counts got a little low on the TiO pa180 set; we paused and rescaled exposure times. 00:55 - Narrow band filters are completed. We're trying the V+R combination but the images/counts being displayed RB science are a little suspect (there is some sort of lag happening). Probably not going to have a chance to do V+R at the opposite position angle, but there should be recent flats for these filters in the archive anyway. 01:00 - We're just going to work our way down the OSU_monitor list, and we should have time to get to other programs as well. 01:35 - OSU_M31merger/M31.ob Conditions look great, seeing ~1" 02:15 - OSU_monitor/N628.ob Conditions are holding. DIMM says ~1.5". Blue focus deteriorating towards end. 03:10 - OSU_monitor/N672.ob Conditions looking great, seeing ~0.8", image quality looks great in both sides. 03:55 - OSU_monitor/N925.ob Conditions holding steady. Seeing is marginally worse (~1"). DIMM reading 1.4". 04:30 - OSU_monitor/N6946.ob Still looking good. 05:25 - ND_SN09ig/sn09ig_BR.ob DIMM is reading ~1.0", and FWHM on the images is ~0.8", so we should be within the tolerance for the program. Seeing creeped up to just over 1" towards the end. 06:10 - UVa_M33_GC/M33_Field4.ob First images coming through look good, seeing 0.8-1". DIMM also reading <1". 07:18 - Got another error about filter/hardware; looks like we didn't get the F9720 exposure set. We power cycled like we did earlier and seem to be in good shape. We used the OT to make a short OB executing the r-SLOAN (blue) and the F9720 (red) exposures from the original OB. 07:45 - Finished UVa_M33_Field4. Starting to get some clouds moving in. Looks like they might move throught fairly quick so we're sticking with LBC. 08:00 - OSU_monitor/M82.ob 08:25 - OSU_monitor/M81.ob Clouds are becoming non-negligible. 08:50 - OSU_monitor/N3077.ob 09:10 - OSU_monitor/I2574 Clouds still a factor for these two. 09:25 - Had to unwrap the telescope. Going to keep trying OSU_monitor targets, but the weather is still fighting us, looks like another 30 min or so until we're clear of this bank of clouds. 09:40 - OSU_monitor/N2903.ob This first set of exposures is not going to be of use, but it looks like it should be clear shortly, so we may run this twice if it suddenly clears. 10:20 - Clouds are finally starting to break. We're going to refocus and do this field again. The remaining targets aren't quite clear of the clouds yet, whereas this field should be doable. 10:30 - OSU_monitor/N2903.ob (again) 10:45 - Conditions looking quite good again (<0.9" seeing, clear). 11:20 - OSU_monitor/N3489.ob Skies looking pretty good, though there are still some cirrus in this part of the sky. Seeing ~1". 12:10 - OSU_monitor/N4214.ob 12:25 - OSU_monitor/N4449.ob Image quality for these looking good, a little under 1". 12:40 - Going to give one more a shot but we'll likely have to cut it so we can set up for flats. 12:45 - OSU_monitor/N4605.ob Did one exposure but sky is starting to get bright so we're stopping the script and moving on. 12:55 - Setting up for flats, some thin clouds to the East, but we should be fine. 13:20 - Trying to do 2 filter combinations that need a bright sky; the Y-FAN are likely going to have low counts. 13:30 - Only going to have time for one PA on the Uspec+F970. There's quite a bit of clouds around that may affect these.
