Date: 2018 Feb 8 UT Observers: Danielle Berg, Malinda Baer TO: Steve Allanson SA: Barry Rothberg Moon Phase: Third Quarter Summary: Clear night, rough seeing at first, better later on. Attempted 3 high priority programs, completed 2. Last 2 programs were lower priority but were visible in the latter half of the night. Observed 3 standard stars. All observations taken on MODS. Minor Technical Issues: MODS2 Red is not working; all MODS2 observations are Blue only MODS2 V Flat failed to turn on Had to retry lock-on several times due to time-outs; Olga suggested possibly adjusting focus values Response was very slow as the night went on Completed Programs: UM_ngc2403_f2 udg1214 (aborted) m82p1 (1 run) sdsss1148+2546 sdsss11201+2806 Calibrations: LBC: MODS: LUCI: Standard Star: gd71 feige34 hz44 Details (All times UT): ------------------------------------- 00:00 - Handover 01:10 - Starting with standard star gd71. Sky is free of clouds. 01:50 - gd71.obs, all grating modes on MODS1, blue grating on MODS2 02:00 - Seeing at 1.1-1.2 02:30 - Starting with UM_ngc2403 to train the observers with masks. Seeing at 1.0-1.2 02:50 - Seeing upwards of 1.3, and a bit jumpy 03:30 - Seeing roughly 1.2 04:10 - MODS2 terminal and GUI went out of sync partway through the script. The last two exposures on MODS2 were taken manually. 05:00 - Switching to feige34 before udg1214 becomes visible, seeing 1.0 05:15 - feige34.obs, dual-grating on MODS1, Blue grating on MODS2 05:40 - Seeing around 1.7 05:55 - Seeing around 1.3 06:00 - Took extra acquisition images on MODS2 to ensure the reference target for udg1214 was properly centered 06:15 - udg1214.obs, seeing at 1.2 06:40 - First exposure shows no sign of target, seeing below 1.0 07:10 - Second exposure also shows no sign of target, moving on to m82p1 07:25 - m82p1.obs, seeing around 1.0 08:10 - Seeing at 0.8, sky remains clear. 09:20 - Seeing around 1.3 09:40 - Repointing and columnating 09:50 - Initial guide star for sdsss1148+2546 is a double, LBT is having difficulty centering on the correct star. 10:00 - Flipped the slit 180 degrees to select new guide star, seeing at 0.7 10:20 - sdsss1148+2546.obs, seeing 0.6. Extra time spent determining what portion of the blue region was supposed to be centered. 11:30 - Limted MODS targets available, selecting sdss1201+2806. Pointing check. 11:40 - Initial guide star was a galaxy, now corrected. 12:00 - Begin science, sdss1201+2546.obs, seeing around 0.5 12:30 - Delay with MODS1, will still complete observations before sunrise, with time for third standard star. 13:30 - Sun beginning to rise during last MODS1 exposure, background likely high, especially in the blue. Switching to hz44 for the last standard of the night. 13:40 - hz44.obs, seeing about 0.6 13:50 - Too bright to continue, closing out
