Date: 2018 May 21 (UT) Observers: Brown, Vallely TO: Geno Bechetti SA: Olga Kuhn (on call) Moon phase: Summary: First half of the night was productive, but the end was not so much. Weather moved it and the last couple targets were probably a wash. Minor technical issues: MODS1b filter wheel gear is having problems, so we need to stick to programs/scripts that only use the clear filter. Most of the general calibrations (i.e. pixflats, arcs, slitflats) had been done before the failure; UM_M83 MOS calibrations were interrupted by the failure (yesterday), while the 0.6" slitflats and the imaging flats have not been done. Calibrations: MODSPhotCal/gd153 MODSPhotCal/bd284211 Completed Programs: MODS: OSU_ASASSN/PS18kh UM_M83/M83_F1 ND_carbon/CVn1 Details (All times UT): ---------------------------------- Plan: Plan is MODS all night. MODS1b filter wheel is having issues, so we can't use anything other than the clear filter. This generally shouldn't be a problem, but likely means the 0.6" slitflats, the UM_M83 MOS calibrations, and imaging flats won't be doable until the filter wheel is fixed. 02:00 - sunset 03:00 - Done focus and collimation. Seeing looks good (0.6"), going to send preset to PS18kh. 03:20 - Starting exposure right at the end of twilight. Seeing is ~0.7", slightly worse this low in the sky. We're 20deg from the moon, Vmoon~19. Seeing/WFS is getting pretty crummy as we approach airmass~2. 04:30 - Going to try UM_M83 while we have the looser elevation limit. Conditions may deteriorate slightly; some thin cirrus visible on the all-sky. 04:45 - Starting UM_M83/M83_F1. Conditions have been reasonably ok. There's some thin cirrus and we're very low in the sky; seeing is ~1.1", but much better near zenith. 05:50 - Moving to standard star gd153. Thin cirrus, seeing is ~0.7" now that we're out of the trees. 06:30 - Starting ND_carbon/CVn1.obs. Conditions looking quite good, but some clouds are quickly making their way toward us. 07:00 - Clouds are about to start moving in, seeing has blown up to ~1.3". 08:00 - Nothing too bad as moved in, seeing hovering around 1". Winds are creeping up there. Seeing <1" for last exposure or so. 08:40 - Moving to AT2017gxq 09:10 - Started AT2017gxq. Had some issues with the acquisition. There was an error with instconfig being in progress, command not allowed. We tried a few things, but the issue persisted. We called Olga, ran the acq script one block at a time, and it seemed to work. There are some thin clouds and the wind might become problematic. 09:50 - Guiding in and out with some clouds. Rest of the night not looking not very good. The trace in the 2D spectrum is barely visible. 10:20 - An attempt was made, but the data don't look promising. We're going to do a standard and try 18jd again, if the wind doesn't close us. Have to unwind and resend the preset etc. 10:45 - Standard star bd224811. 10:50 - Standard bd284211 is done, going to try to get collimated near ASASSN18jd in case the clouds prove to be thin. 11:20 - We weren't able to get collimated on the left, weather and twilight were not helping. Probably not going to happen.
