Date: 2018 Jun 05 (UT) Observers: Jon Brown (OSU) TO: Steve Allanson SA: Dave Thompson Moon phase: Summary: Night started off very promising, but a little before midnight the clouds moved in, and the data are likely to be of little use. Minor technical issues: Instconfig communications glitch. I've encountered this on a few separate occasions, and a simple retry or abort doesn't seem to fix the issue, but updating the GUIs before a retry seems to work. Calibrations: MODSPhotCal/gd153 Completed Programs: MODS: UM_Icarus/MACSJ1149LS1 ND_carbon/CVn2 Details (All times UT): ---------------------------------- Plan: Plan is MODS all night. 02:30 - sunset Couple hours before sunset, weather looked not great (clouds) but looks like it should clear up once the sun goes down. 03:20 - Going to start with standard star gd153. Note: I'm copying all *.acq files to *_acqb.acq and changing the ACQCamera to Blue and ACQFilter to g_sdss. 03:30 - Starting gd153.obs. 03:45 - Starting UM_Icarus/MACSJ1149LS1 03:50 - The guide star that was selected was outside the patrol field. In order to proceed with the observation, we opted to choose a position angle of 290 and re-execute the scripts. We ran into what seems to be a communcations glitch with instconfig; we clicked update on GUIs and that seemed to resolve the issue. As expected, MODS2r is not cooperating. Some exposures (1?) may be be acceptable, while others are not. Also note that bright nearby stars are causing ghosts on the image. Last couple images might have had deteriorating image quality. Target was getting pretty low in the sky and the guide star flux seems to have decreased by a few tenths of a magnitude; 05:15 - Moving to ND_carbon/CVn2. Conditions still seem pretty good, may be some thin cirrus. Guider FWHM ~0.9". 06:20 - Condtions still looking pretty good, but satellite shows some clouds building up (pretty thin though, as the Galaxy is still very clear on the all sky). Guider FWHM ~0.6". 06:40 - Moving to OSU_ASASSN/ASASSN17pg. Conditions are generally clear, but this target is somewhat low and in the West, so local transparency may not be great. Guide star is somewhat fuzzy/elongated. We've got something like 1 mag of cloud extinction, but we can see the target in the acq image, so we'll give it a shot. 07:00 - The clouds have really moved in...not looking good. 07:15 - First images are in, trace is detected, but it will be pretty low S/N. Data might be vaguely useful. Actually, probably not. Clouds got progressively worse, guiding was lost on the last few minutes of the last exposure. Extinction is ~4-5 mag based on the LBTGuide plots, but they are patchy. 08:30 - Starting OSU_ASASSN/PS110jh. Object visible on the field image, so we'll give it a shot. Weather does not look like it will cooperate, however. 09:30 - Conditions still quite bad. 10:45 - Exposure sequence finished; executing additional exposures since it looks almost clear, and we have about 20 minutes before 12 deg twilight. Sky looks mostly clear in this direction, seeing ~1". 11:15 - There's still a haze of clouds, and the sky is fairly bright.
