Date: 2018 Nov 1 UT Observers: Suk Sien Tie, Jack Neustadt TO: Steve Allanson SA: Olga Kuhn Moon phase: half full Summary: 2nd half night for OSURC, doing all LBC-red. Started out clear, but cirrusy and clouds for a few hours in between. Had a minor guiding issue at the beginning that was quickly resolved. Smooth observing for the rest of the night. Completed Programs: OSU_monitor/NGC628/LBCR OSU_monitor/NGC672/LBCR OSU_monitor/NGC2403/LBCR OSU_monitor/NGC3077/LBCR OSU_monitor/IC2574/LBCR OSU_monitor/NGC925/LBCR OSU_monitor/M81/LBCR OSU_monitor/M82/LBCR Calibrations: Biases, sky flats (maybe not useful) Standard Stars: NA Details (All times UT): ----------------------------------------------- 07:40 - Handover from SOUL-team. Took test biases. Moon is up, so doing all monitor OB's without blue channel 07:46 - began OSU_monitor for N628. Seeing at ~1.2 First image (075708) has doubled stars - telescope maybe shifted during exposure? Second exposure (080247) - same issue. LBC guide star plot showed crazy jumps. Third exposure (080827) - same issue. Turned guiding off for the next 3 images. Fourth exposure (081420) - no jumping. Seeing on image is around 1.3. Fifth exposure (081959) - fine. Seeing around 1.8. DIMM seeing fluctuated rapidly and randomly (up to 2.5"!). Sixth exposure (082538) - better than previous. After sixth exposure, Steve reset PCS so that we could try observing with guide star. 08:33 - Re-ran N628 OB for 3 exposures to make up for three bad images in previous run. 08:52 - Began OSU_monitor N672. Seeing fluctuated within 1.2-1.6 09:33 - Began OSU_monitor N2403. Seeing around 1.2. 09:59 - Began OSU_monitor N3077. Seeing around 1.2-1.3. Background counts were (relatively) high, likely due to airmass 10:16 - Began OSU_monitor I2574. Seeing around 1.1-1.5 10:31 - Began OSU_monitor N925. Seeing around 1.2-1.4. Background counts are pretty high, ~48,000. 11:02 - Began OSU_M81. Seeing ~2. Clouds coming in hard. First 2 images look bad (probably useless) due to clouds. 11:24 - Reran M81 obs. Seeing ~1.5-1.8. Clouds starting to disperse and images look better. 11:43 - Began OSU_M82. Still quite cirrusy. Seeing ~1.0. Images look decent. 11:55 - Going to try N2903 (cirrus and relatively close to the moon). Seeing is 1.2. Never mind, background counts are way too high. 12:10 - Redo M82. Seeing ~1.0. Still cirrusy. Background cts have gone down to reasonable values (~4500). 12:24 - Just past astro twilight. Can't find I-band obs script, so just going to re-do M81, since the background cts have gone considerably down. Seeing 1.0. Images look much better. 12:38 - Background cts getting higher due to brighter sky + clouds. 13:00 - Done for the night. Took sky flats, but probably not useful due to clouds (consider it practice runs). 13:31 - Biases.
