Date: 2019 Apr 01 UTC Observers: Danielle Berg and Jack Neustadt (driving) TO: Steve Allanson SA: Barry Rothberg Moon phase: Waning Crescent Summary: Started the night with LUCI to finish Makemake, but started with UVa_BCD as a filler. Both sets of LUCI scripts has issues, but we manages. Moved to LBC in the middle of the night, but seeing varried drastically due to changing temp and humidity. PI should check whether the observations are acceptable. We finished all the available LBC targets, so ended the night with MODS. Calibrations: LUCI Darks Completed Programs: UVa_BCDs J0811 UVa_MakeMake OSU_MONITOR: N2403, I2574, M81, M82, N3077, N4214, N4449, M101 OSU_STORM N5940 Standards: MODS: BD332642 Details (All times UT): ---------------------------------- 01:10 Starting up LUCI Upon initializing, ran into a MOS error. Not a good start 01:35 Opening telescope chambers Pointing and collomating * Have a bit of time at beginning before we can do Makemake* 02:15 Starting UVa_BCDs J0811 Acquiring BD311302 telluric Telluric script is not ok. Cannot expose for 240s on a 10th mag star. Would leave persistance for the entire night. Taking manually exposures of 2x2.51x25. MER mode didn't work (not sure why), but doesn't need to be used with bright targets, so using LIR instead. 03:10 Observing UVa_BCDs J0811 This target was very difficult to find. We subtracted dithered images and it was still very challenging to find the target. We did get on source, as confirmed by finding emission lines in the dithered images. In the future such faint targets should be aquired via blind offset. 04:08 GCS has drifted a bit on the right, so fixing before starting next target. 04:17 Resuming UVa Makemake Observing AOV telluric 04:21 LUCI2 grabbed the wrong guide star. Need to adjust and unwrap the azimuth. 04:30 Resending the telluric script. 04:40 Observing G2V telluric 04:54 Observing Makemake Note that this field is nearly impossible to check when you take your alignment image through the slit. Saw continuum in subtracted dithered images. 05:57 Rerunning makemake to complete the 2 hrs (including exposures from first night). * Switching to LBC * 07:04 Acquiring OSU_MONITOR N2403 07:23 Observing OSU_MONITOR N2403 Seeing blew up; varied between 1.5-2.0. 07:36 Acquiring OSU_MONITOR I2574 07:49 Observing OSU_MONITOR I2574 Seeing ~1.3(B), 1.15(R) 01:01 Acquiring OSU_MONITOR M81 01:13 Observing OSU_MONITOR M81 Seeing ~1.2(B), 1.1(R) 01:26 Acquiring OSU_MONITOR M82 01:39 Observing OSU_MONITOR M82 Seeing ~1.2(B), 1.1(R) 08:50 Acquiring OSU_MONITOR N3077 09:02 Observing OSU_MONITOR N3077 Seeing ~1.6(B), 1.4(R) Improved slightly to ~1.3, 1.2 09:17 Acquiring OSU_MONITOR N4214 dofpia failed, so is trying again dofpia failed again, it seems that this is a poor field for collumnating. TO is trying a manual offset seeing isn't great, with extinction of ~0.5 mag, also likely made this difficult 09:40 Observing OSU_MONITOR N4214 Seeing ~1.3 09:49 Acquiring N4449 10:02 Observing N4449 Seeing ~1.5(B), 1.3(R) 10:15 Acquiring M101 10:24 Observing M101 Seeing ~1.8(R), 1.7(R) * Seeing is not improving and we are out of available LBC targets.
