Date: 2020 September 15 UTC Observers: C. Wood (ND, lead), P. Garnavich (ND), R. Pogge (OSU), O. Kuhn (LBTO) Other Participants: A. Goon-Tuli (ND), P. Vallely (OSU) Special Assistants: Bentley, Trim, Juniper TO: David Gonzalez (LBTO) SA: Olga Kuhn (LBTO) Moon phase: gray (moonrise around 4am MST) Summary: Overall weather is less hazy than previous nights, but with small clouds moving through to start. Had to close for ~half an hour due to humidity, but otherwise a good night. Seeing around 1 arcsec most of the night. Started with MODS and switched to LBC around 08:00 UT. Had some issues with focus for LBC, likely from temperture difference between ambient and mirror. Mirror panicked at twilight. Programs: MODSPhotCal/bd332642 OSU_ASASSN/ASASSN17jz UVa_BCD_MODS/J2229 OSU_monitor/N6946 OSU_dwarfs/KK13 OSU_dwarfs/UGC1703 Details (All times UT): ---------------------- 01:30 - Dome opened at sunset, starting with MODS 02:00 - Slewing to standard star BD332642, waiting for 12 degree twilight. Seeing ~1 arcsec. 02:15 - Starting observations for BD332642. Little poofy clouds moving through so we lost guiding for a moment. 02:30 - Re-observing BD3342642. Waiting for 18 degree twilight before moving on. 02:50 - Moving to OSU_ASASSN/ASASSN17jz. Changed PA to 90 instead of 80 but kept same guide star. 03:00 - Starting observation for OSU_ASASSN/ASASSN17jz. Seeing ~1.1 arcsec average, but jumps around due to thin clouds. 04:55 - Still on ASASSN17jz. Humidity is jumping up some and there is condensation on the all sky camera. 05:15 - About to finish ASASSN17jz and noticed image counter has glitched but actual image count is correct. It started taking more images but we aborted the program. 05:15 - Moving to UVa_BCD_MODS/J2229. Still keeping an eye on the humidity level which is up to ~90%. 05:31 - So close to finishing the alignment for J2229 but had to stop to close the dome because of humidity. 06:16 - Reopening the dome and going back to J2229. 06:45 - Starting observations for UVa_BCD_MODS/J2229. Seeing is ~1 arcsec. 07:57 - Switching to LBC 08:19 - Moving to OSU_monitor/N6946 08:35 - Starting observations for N6946. Seeing is ~1.6 arcsec, looking pretty low though 09:13 - Moving to OSU_dwarfs/KK13. Close to the 85 degree elevation limit and above the 80 degree limit where there has been some trailing on LBC images. Tried to avoid this situation by doing the monitor target first but didn't quite get past it. 09:35 - Starting observations for KK13. Seeing is ~1.0. 09:46 - Stopping observations to refocus. Red side images looked elongated. 09:52 - Starting observations for KK13 again. Seeing still ~1.0 arcsec. After recofusing the target came down below 80 degrees so no sign of trailing. 10:51 - Moving to OSU_dwarfs/UGC1703. Suggestion for PI to split observation files to provide an opportunity for refocusing midway through since focus seemed to get worse throughout the observations of KK13. 10:58 - Starting observations for UGC1703. Seeing ~1.1 arcsec. Observations will end a little after twilight. 11:41 - Just at twilight, primary mirror panicked and observations had to be stopped. Unclear what the cause is. Giving up on the rest of the observations (had 2 dither positions left).
