Date: 2020 Oct 10 UTC Observers: Kuhn, Garnavich (lead), Pogge, Wood TO: Steve Allanson SA: Mrs. Chippy, Bentley, Trim All observers and SAs working remotely from their respective homes. Moon phase: gray (last quarter) Summary: MODS then LUCI. Clear all night with good seeing, mostly sub-arcsec with puffs to 1+arcsec, episodes of ~0.6 arcesc. Continuing with dark programs before moonrise, then moonlight-tolerant programs after with MODS/LUCI. Calibrations: LUCI sky flats end of the night, plus remaining closed-dome cals MODS calibrations (pixflats, slitflats, comps) end of the night Executed Programs: OSU_ASASSN ASASSN20hx OSU_Lithium BrownDwarf1 (2MASS J00302476+2244492) ND_j0053 - binocular staggered time series premier UVa_Eris UVa_nirjets AFGL5180 imaging (following last-night's long-slit) ND_origin G77-61 Details (All times UT): ---------------------------------- 01:00 - opened up, configured for binocular MODS, LUCI warmed up and on standby 01:24 - MODS Flux Star BD+284211 while still bright before twilight 01:30 - collimating ~0.8arcsec seeing 01:45 - doing red-only standard MODS script 01:52 - dual MODS standard seeing MODS1 ~0.8" MODS2 ~0.65" 02:10 - OSU_ASASSN - ASASSN20hx 02:20 - slit acq. wavefront on MODS1 is elongated (atmospheric dispersion?) 02:50 - seeing up to 1.0" 03:30 - final readout for ASASSN20hx seeing ~1.0arcsec 03:33 - OSU_Lithium, BrownDwarf1 (2MASS J00302476+2244492) 03:45 - starting integration 0.7arsec seeing. 4x1800s exposures This runs for nearly 2 hours... Seeing started 0.7, up to 0.9 at times during exp 2, 0.6 at start of exp3, steady at 0.6-0.7 during exp4. (4x1800s) 05:58 - ND_j0053 - long spectral time series (~2 hours) For this target we are using modified .obs scripts for MODS1 and MODS2 that staggers the start of the time sequence by delaying the start of MODS2 dgo by ~1/2 the exposure time so that MODS2 is always observing while MODS1 is closed-shutter for readout/setup. This gives the time series twice the effective cadence and zero deadtime. 06:10 - acq and taking data. MODS1+2 blue staggered by 1/2 exposure time right side worse image quality than left (cooling difference?) 07:05 - mirrors evened out at 0.7arcsec. Moonrise 07:50 - temperature dropped and seeing up to 1.2arcsec on right side 08:08 - Done with Binocular MODS. Staggered MODS1/2 worked well. ======================================================================== Binocular LUCI 08:10 - Reconfiguring for LUCIs 08:35 - UVa_Eris Mask error on LUCI2, had to call Dave T for help. The strain gauges were on and the preconditions for move-to-turnout were violated. 08:44 - Recovered from fault, starting acq 08:52 - A0V Telluric star for Eris (HD13935) 08:57 - Slewing to Eris in non-sidereal mode Doing acqusition in J instead of K like last night, much easier to see the target. 09:15 - Starting set of spectra 09:30 - seeing ~0.7arcsec 10:00 - started rep2 on Eris. Seeing ~0.8-arcsec 10:50 - Tellurc star for Eris (HD13935) 11:08 - UVa_nirjets AGFL5180 imaging 11:10 - seeing ~0.65arcsec 11:15 - left side guide probe jumped...had to restart 11:21 - restarted scripts 11:58 - done 11:59 - ND_origin, target G77-61 - short observation moving into astronomical twilight 12:01 - Telluric star HIP13917 for G77-61 12:16 - finishing telluric, another guide star lost on left side...but telluric ok 12:18 - slewing to G77-61 12:29 - starting spectroscopy 12:40 - Done. Doing sky flats 12:55 - K sky flats 13:09 - BrG and H2 sky flats 13:30 - done. 13:35 - Steve closing up *** End of Night Calibrations: 13:38 - starting closed-dome LUCI & MODS calibrations
