Date: 2021 Jan 06 UTC LBTO Observer: Olga Kuhn Observers: Mark Whittle (UVa), Rick Pogge (OSU) Remote Participants: Kyle Corcoran (UVa) TO: Josh Williams Special Assistant: Trim All observing is remote in C-19 mode. Moon phase: Last-quarter moon (50%) rising ~midnight. Twilight at ~0155UT evening, 1252UT morning Summary: Middle gray time, started with MODS, seeing was terrible (2-3") so switched to LUCI so while ~2" visible, better at IR, then back to MODS, seeing now 1" or so, then to LBC until dawn. Clear all night, no clouds. Instruments: LUCI1+2, MODS1 R+B, MODS2 B, LBC Blue+Red (Blue is back!) Unavailable: MODS2 Red (suspected dewar leak) Calibrations: LBC V+I, B+I, and Us+I sky flats (dawn) LUCI Darks (UVa_nirjets/nirjetsLS, UVa_BCD_LUCI) Executed Programs: MODS: ND_merger (visit 2) UM_Dwarfs HS0837 (do-over, previous night compromised) OSU_XMDs SBS0940 LUCI: UVa_nirjets AFGL4029 (imaging) LBC: OSU_monitor, N3344, N4395, N4449, N4236, N4605, N4736 Time Lost: None, poor seeing but worked around it Details (All times UT): ---------------------------------- Instrument: MODS1R+B/MODS2R 00:56 - opening 01:15 - pointed and collimated near first target 01:26 - 12-degree twilight ND_merger, visit 2 of J0053 01:30 - Slew to J0053 with PA=-40 wait for twilight, let WFS settle. Seeing started ~1.1-arcsec, occasional puffs to 1.9-arcsec 01:56 - 18-degree twilight 02:00 - Start of science observing, seeing ~1.8-arcsec 03:14 - guide star jump briefly 1.5-2 arcsec seeing 04:15 - done Flux Standard: G191B2B 04:15 - Slew to G191B2B 04:36 - mods1 dual mode, mods2 blue-only calibs, seeing ~2-arcsec --------------- 04:45 - reconfiguring for LUCI (hoping for better seeing in IR) 05:06 - checking collimation near narget (AFGL4029), DIMM reading seeing of 2.5:, FWHM visible-light on AGw units is ~3-arcsec UVa_nirjets AFGL4029 05:12 - starting imaging scripts: K+K, 1.3-1.4-arcsec 05:34 - Br-gamma + H_2, 1.3-arcsec 06:01 - J+H - 1.2-arcsec 06:02 - Pa-beta + FeII, 1.4-arcsec 06:44 - done ALTA predicts seeing getting better and we've seen guider seeing improving steadly from 3-arcsec to 1.5-arcsec during this visit. Primary mirror temperatures are ~0.8C above ambient, arguing against going to LBC until they settle. Temp dropped by ~3C during the past 4 hours. --------------- 06:50 - Reconfiguring back to MODS 07:07 - checked pointing and collimation near HS08327 UM_Dwarfs, HS0837 07:10 - slew and acquire, seeing 1.2-1.4 arcsec, much improved 07:25 - starte science observing, seeing 1-arcsec to 0.9-arcsec Spectra look *much* better than the previous night, good continuum (a science requirement) and superior line contrast. Do-over was justified. OSU_XMDs SBS0940 08:36 - slew and acquire, PA=-155, seeing about 1-arcsec 08:48 - started science observations (3x1200s, dual grating) seeing 0.9-arcsec at start, variable during 2nd, ended ~1.1-arcsec 09:55 - done --------------- Primary mirrors are equilibrated, reconfiguring for LBC 09:55 - reconfigured for LBC-R+B, we have B back tonight! OSU_monitor 10:15 - N3344, problems with few stars on focus images, slow convergence 10:33 - start science, seeing 1-arcsec on LBC-B, but 1.5-arcsec on LBC-R 11:05 - N4395 slew, lost x2go session to "robs" machine, restart link 11:20 - N4395 focus field 1-arcsec seeing 11:29 - start science, seeing 1.3-arcsec 11:40 - Done 11:47 - N4449, seeing 1.3/1.2-arcsec blue/red 12:03 - N4325, first images poor seeing of 1.8-arcsec 12:21 - N4605 - seeing 1.5-arcsec 12:45 - N4736 - seeing 1.2-arcsec (worse on blue) 12:55 - 18-degree dawn 13:10 - Done ------------------------------ Calibrations LBC Twilight Sky Flats, Blank Field 12+54 V+I PA=0 V+I PA=180 B+I PA=180 Us+I PA=180 Us+I PA=0 (I starting to saturate) LUCI Darks UVa_nirjets UVa_nirjetsLS UVa_BCD_LUCI
