Date: 2021 Apr 14 UTC LBTO Observer: Olga Kuhn (LBTO) Lead Partner Observer: Rick Pogge (OSU) Other Partner Observers: Noah Rogers (UM) Special Assitants: Trim, Mrs. Chippy Telescope Operator: Steve Allanson (LBTO) Moon phase: 2d past new moon Summary: The conditions curtailed the plans - high winds and clouds delayed opening by 3 hours, and then closed us again for another 2.5 hours around 1am (2 for clouds and about 0.5 for a latch station problem when reopening). Despite this we observed a 5 OSU_monitor fields. The choice of fields was constrained by the wind directoin, so only one first-priority target was observed, N3077. Two priority 2 fields: N4736 and N4236 and two priority 3 fields: N5194 and M101 were also observed. Calibrations: While closed, we finished the MODS calibrations and we obtained darks for the OSU_XMDs_LUCI and UVa_XMD_LUCI programs. In the morning, it was clear enough for sky flats and we obtained twilight sky flats with LBCB at V (PA=0 & 180), B (PA = 180) and Us (PA=180) and, simultaneously, with LBCR at R (both PAs). Completed Observations: OSU_monitor: N3077, N4736, N4236, N5194, and M101 Details (All times UT): ---------------------------------- 01:03 Taking a series of LBC binocular 25 biases - horizontal striping still present on LBCR bias but much less than during the test biases. 01:52 Sunset We are remaining closed due to clouds and wind gusts exceeding the 22 m/s limit. 02:26 Starting closed dome calibrations Closed-Dome Calibrations MODS: grpixflats (1x1 and 1x2 binning) and grlamps were done at the end of the night last night. Still needed are all of the slits flats (0.6", 0.8", 1" and 1.2" at 1x1 binning and 0.8" at 1x2 binning) and red-only sdss_r imaging flats. LUCI: darks and flats/arcs for both OSU_XMDs_LUCI & UVa_XMDs. There are patterns seen on the first L1 and L2 darks - the mottled pattern on L1 that diminishes with time and the channel boundary effects on L2 which seem prominent on the first image of the sequence and diminish as the sequence progresses. In the left hand column are the differences between the first two darks taken with L1 (top) and L2 (bottom) and in the right hand column are differences between two darks taken in the middle of the 2nd sequence. Overview (times are given in UT): 02:44 12-deg twilight 03:14 18-deg twilight 05:03 Steve is opening up the enclosure. The winds are still pretty high so these will limit us to observing away from the SW and may require us to close again. Need to get the LUCI flat/arcs and also the MODS imaging flats; all other cals done. OSU_monitor/N5194 05:12 Slewing to focus field 05:13 dohybrid, /x2 --- though the field has many possible pupils, it is only fitting 1 or 2. I'll run dofpia without the /x2 next. The estimated seeing is very large and dohybrid thinks it has converged after only 2 FPIA iterations, but for the red side, on the final image, there was a lot of coma and only 1 pupil was fit. 05:24 Steve is clearing corrections on LBCR. I then ran dohybrid (without the x2). Still only fit one pupil, but the fit looks good and it converged to pupils that lool well collimated albeit fuzzy. 05:33 copointing - dCE and dCA ~ 10" 05:37 Starting the science OB. The guide star FWHM are ~1.2" during the first exposures. OSU_monitor/M101 06:16 Slewing to the focus field 06:17 dofpia 06:21 copointing 06:24 Starting science OB. OSU_monitor/N4236 06:59 Slewing to N4236 focus field 07:00 dofpia -- estimated seeing & pupils looking better 07:05 copointing 07:09 Starting the science OB. OSU_monitor/N3077 07:24 Slewing to N3077 focus field 07:25 dofpia (wind is skirting the limits again - more clouds also coming) 07:30 copointing 07:33 Starting the science OB b 073428 4.6 pix r 073422 3.8 pix OSU_monitor/I2574 07:46 Slewing to focus field (using I2574_edit_focus - a 3rd OB for this focus position) 07:47 dofpia - 07:50 copointing … but the clouds have clobbered the field and I see only about 1 star in the image. 07:53 Holding for clouds 07:56 Closing for clouds 08:19 Resuming MODS calibrations 10:15 Wind dropping and some clearing, re-opening paused for problem with latching, fixed OSU_monitor/N4736 10:43 Slewing to focus field 10:46 dofpia 10:52 copointing B has FWHM ~5.5 pix (1.2") and R, FWHM ~ 4.5 (1.0") 10:55 Starting science - airmass 1.576 11:15 done 11:16 running fpia again to see if we can focus/collimated any better. B side pupils had seemed a bit off in first run, though copointing image looked OK. 11:22 Starting the science a second round 11:25 18-deg twilight 11:38 OB ended. 11:55 12-deg twilight LBC Twilight Sky Flats 12:11 Starting V+R at scale=5 and PA=0 --- R a bit low, but at least the last 4 V flats are good. 12:16 V+R at scale=2 and PA=180 12:21 Starting B+R at scale=1 and PA=180. The set of 5 per filter were good 12:25 Starting S(Uspec)+R at scale=1 and PA=180 - counts high 12:27 Resuming S+R at scale=0.25 (R uses 0.25-sec and Us uses 0.89-sec). 12:30 Repeating S+R at scale=0.25. Stopped before it finished because the counts were >45000. 12:32 Steve is closing up. 12:47 Sunrise
