Date: 2021 June 17 UTC LBTO Observer: O. Kuhn (LBTO) Lead Partner Observer: J. Neustadt (OSU) Other Partner Observers: R. Pogge (OSU) Telescope Operator: Steve Allanson Special Assistants: none(!) Moon phase: First quarter, moonset at 0055 MST Summary: We used the LBCs for most of the night and observed all the OSU_monitor targets listed in the plan above. The last two were observed after moonset, but many of the others were ~33-45 deg from the moon and the backgrounds were high in some. At 09:36 we reconfigured to MODS for an observation of OSU_ASASSN/ASASSN14fo and completed 5 10-min observations which ended about 8 minutes after 12-deg twilight. The summary LBC image quality log is 20210618_fwhm.txt Issues: A new set of spots appeared on MODS2 images (IT 8408) --- we noticed it in the evening and it is most likely due to debris on the field lens. It appeared in both blue and red images. A screenshot is at the end of the log. One long slit program was done at the end of the night and the standard calibrations were taken - 1" slit flats as well as pixflats and comp lamps. Good chance it is moth debris. Weather: Mostly clear skies, though there was some cirrus that passed through around 08:30. Smoke was not an issue, though there was a haze. The seeing was variable and not very good - from ~1-2". Preparations: 01:00 Took test LBC images closed dome with the LBCs in the beam. The blob from last night is gone. Elliott found two things today during an inspection: the tube directing boil off gas from the dewar to the dewar window was loose and there was an obstruction in it. The obstruction is gone and he tightened the fitting at the dewar. (IT 8407) Overview (times are given in UT): 02:25 Open 02:45 Starting flats on Blank11+51 02:52 Starting a series of 5 Uspec flats - counts are high (>30k in 1 sec) 02:56 Repeating the series at Uspec & F970N20 (IB flats are low, but Uspec fine, at 15-30K) lbcb.20210618.025951.fits is bad (too few downloaded pixels error) 03:00 Start V-BESSEL & R-BESSEL (V over B because there are some B flats from 0531) 03:06 Start B-BESSEL & R-BESSEL with 2.3x scaling (about 10k-20k blue and red) 03:11 Start B-BESSEL & R-BESSEL @ PA=180 with 4x scaling, then 8x scaling (4,8 sec) 03:16 Start V-BESSEL & R-BESSEL @ PA=180 with 16x scaling (16-sec in this case V:R 4:3) We got at least 10 good flats at V-, B- and R-Bessel at two opposite PAs, and we got 5 good flats at Uspec, but there were many Uspec flats that were taken a few days ago during the AZ block for the EGS program.
