The original MODS proposal underwent a Conceptual Design Review by an ad-hoc LBT Optical Spectrograph Working Group (LBTOSWG) in Columbus on 1999 March 8 and 9. The outcome of this review was a set of recommendations by the LBTOSWG that were adopted as part of the basic design of the MODS spectrographs.

Note that at the time of this review, the LBT Science Advisory Committee (SAC) had not yet established formal review procedures for LBT facility instruments, and thus this was not a formal CDR per se. When the SAC later formalized those procedures, LBT project-level reviews such as this were grandfathered, and the SAC recognized this review as serving as an effective CDR for MODS Project.
